Wear Red for Equal Pay Day Tomorrow!

“If you would wear lower cut shirts, you would probably get more pay.”
— Quote from a male Wal-Mart Manager, mentioned in the Dukes v. Wal-Mart case

Following the Dukes v. Wal-Mart Supreme Court case, it is important to stand up against pay inequities and gender discrimination, now more than ever. Hadassah and its coalition partners will join together tomorrow to observe Equal Pay Day and raise awareness about the nation’s wage gap.

For every dollar a man makes, women with comparable education and experience make only 77 cents. Equal Pay Day is observed in April to show how far into 2011 women must work to earn what men earned in 2010. Equal Pay Day is also scheduled on a Tuesday because that’s how long it takes women’s earnings to catch up to that of men from the previous week!

When it comes to pay, women are in the red! Show your support and raise awareness for pay equity by wearing red on Equal Pay Day, April 12, 2011.

In honor of Equal Pay Day, legislators in the House and Senate will reintroduce the Paycheck Fairness Act, which was narrowly defeated on a procedural vote in the Senate last fall. Hadassah strongly supports the adoption and strict enforcement of pay equity laws to reduce the wage gap and ensure better economic security for women. Contact your legislators tomorrow and encourage them to support and co-sponsor the Paycheck Fairness Act.
