Hadassah Acknowledges Significance Of Commitment To Birthright Israel

NEW YORK – New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a proclamation on Wednesday declaring May Birthright Israel Month in New York. Last month, Taglit-Birthright Israel said the organization had a goal that by 2013, it would be sending 51,000 people – one of every two young Jewish adults – to Israel every year. Since it was established 11 years ago, the organization has sent almost 300,000 Jews to Israel.

Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, and the parent organization of Young Judaea, the Zionist youth movement of Hadassah, which offers a trip through Birthright, marked the significance of renewed commitment in sending young Jewish adults to Israel.

Hadassah National President Nancy Falchuk released the following statement:

“Hadassah and Young Judaea applaud the attention Mayor Bloomberg is paying to encouraging Jewish young people to take advantage of the life-changing opportunities Birthright provides. His announcement this week, combined with the Government of Israel’s pledge earlier this year of $100 million to Birthright, means that many thousands of more people will have the chance to experience Israel. Mayor Bloomberg recognizes the validity and the importance of Birthright’s mission – to bring every young Jew to Israel to amaze, delight, enlighten, revive pride and connect to the Jewish homeland.

“As always, Young Judaea continues to help make Birthright the experience of a lifetime for Jewish young people from around the world.”
