"One who saves a single life -it is as if he has saved an entire world"
—Pirke D'Rav Eliezer
According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network—the only national patient waiting list and most comprehensive archive of organ donation data—28,053 organ transplants were completed in 2012 from 14,013 donors. This minute, over 117,000 people are candidates on the organ transplant waiting list.
In Israel, the Hadassah Medical Organization has been designated by the Israel Ministry of Health to serve as the National Center for Bone Marrow transplantation. Hadassah is a center for heart, lung, liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants. It is also home to the national skin repository and national bone bank.
Due to the severe shortage of organ donors in Israel and the constantly increasing wait time for transplants, the center recently introduced a mechanical "artificial heart" as a "bridge to transplantation". This left ventricular assist device (LVAD) can be implanted in critically ill patients to keep them alive until a donor heart becomes available.
April marks another opportunity to continue educating members, families and communities about organ donation. Check out the story, "It's a Hadassah Kidney!," an excerpt from Hadassah's Thin Threads Centennial Book, and learn more about how you too can save a life with Pikuah Nefesh, Hadassah's Health & Wellness organ donation program.
Hadassah encourages all Americans to discuss in advance with their families, physicians, and attorney organ donation and other end-of-life decisions so that more lifesaving organs will be available to those in need.
