From Natan Sharansky, Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel:

The grief of Yom Hazikaron and the joy of Yom Ha'Atzmaut are closely intertwined.

As Professor Asa Kasher, the author of the Israel Defense Forces’ Code of Ethics and himself a bereaved father, noted, the proximity between the two days is meant to ensure that elements of each are present in the other – that the losses commemorated on Yom Hazikaron are viewed in their broad national context, and that we express our boundless gratitude to the fallen as we celebrate the triumph of Yom Ha'Atzmaut.

This, in many ways, is the essence of the Israeli experience.
