Why Hadassah?

Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, was founded in 1912 by Henrietta Szold. Since its inception, Hadassah has remained unwavering in its devotion to improve the quality of life for all the people of Israel and to strengthen Jewish life in the United States. Hadassah is the largest volunteer organization in the United States, with nearly 300,000 members. Hadassah’s work is focused on Medicine & Health, Education, Children & the Future, and the Environment, Hadassah changes lives…one person at a time.

"My family gives tzedakah to help those in need. My parents have taught me to give one dollar of my allowance every week to tzedakah. In honor of my becoming a bat mitzvah, I have asked that instead of gifts for myself, I would like to receive donations for Hadassah for tikkun olam, making the world a better place."
—Rebecca, Baltimore, MD

If you’re planning a bar/bat mitzvah in Israel, Hadassah offers some over-the-top locations. Abbell Synagogue at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem has 12 world-famous magnificent stained glass windows by artist Marc Chagall. No place could be more beautiful, or more spiritual. If you want an outdoor setting, our three Youth Aliyah villages, located throughout Israel, are beautiful and green.
