Message from the President
We are the largest Zionist Organization in the United States, and the largest women's membership organization in the United States. With 300,000+ members and supporters, we have representation in every congressional district.
Hadassah embraces the concept of peace through medicine both as a moral imperative and a core organizational mission. Because of our outstanding example of peace through medicine, Hadassah Medical Organization is the first and only medical organization in Israel that has been nominated for a Noble Peace Prize.
Even though Hadassah - and all of us in its chapters - has been operating on a calendar year for quite a while, we somehowstill have that sense of a “meeting year,” i.e.: September through May. Things rev up in the Fall and quiet down after Pesach. And, in spite of good intentions to program throughout the summer, we usually wind up with something light and lovely in August. June and July seem lost in doldrums and humidity. That said, a graciousthank you is in order to our Activities Committee for a successful Lunch and Game Day at Kobernick House on August 14. Ruth Klein, Joy Seigel, Claudia Dombrow, Barbara Segal, Cathy Reinitz, new Committee member Abby Hofeler, along with Willie Walter, Membership VP, and Rhoda Rothschild, Webmistress, organized a lovely day.
The holidays are upon us. Happy Birthday to the World! The Days of Awe may be past by the time you read this, the sobering, sometimes sad, thoughts and contemplation that make upYom Kippur at an end, but the joy and exhilaration of Sukkot and Simchat Torah linger on as we move forward into the flurry of activity that is “season” here in Southwest Florida.
I returned from the National Business Meeting and the Nurses Council meeting - held in Baltimore at the end of July - excited aboutChoose Where to Make Your Impact as well as Every Beat Counts - Hadassah’s Heart Health Program. You will be learning more about these new programs very soon. Hadassah 2.0 - that is, lessons in what’s new at Hadassah and in SaBra Chapter - will begin with the October 10 meeting. Be there! “Impacting Lives - The Heart of Hadassah” - that is the title of Hadassah’s 2012 Annual Report. Well put. The medical research, the healing across borders, the 300,000+ Youth Aliyah graduates, the U.S. initiatives of empowering women……. the impact on so many lives is measureable, statistically. But there is so much more than numbers. The impact of “doing” becomes part of our “being.” Not only are we impacting others’ lives, we are changing our own. Mitzvot, after all, nourish our soul.
. . . .
We’re heading into a busy season. What’s ahead is listed on Page 5 of the Newsletter. From MD and professional artist, Holly Barbour, we’ll learn about face lifts, eyelid surgery, and other beauty options (October 10). “Little Satchmo,” Sharon Preston, that is, decided to break her long silence and claim her legacy as Louis Armstrong’s daughter (November 19). Check out the schedule for the four-part workshop, “Writing An Ethical Will.” It promises to be an inspiring, soul searching experience. And, you won’t want to miss the Danziger-Polejes Book Club, resuming meetings on October 3.
Besides discussingAmerican Dervish, the group will choose the books that will be read and reviewed this year.
