Message from the President
For the very first time the beginning of the new calendar year is also the beginning of the new Hadassah year. As determined by National Hadassah, we are now on a new schedule for both the fiscal as well as the program year. This year our new executive board for the El Paso Chapter of Hadassah was elected on December 3, 2013 and will be installed on January 9, 2014. Please join us at the El Paso Playhouse, 2501 Montana Avenue, at 6:30 pm for the Installation, Donor Recognition, and a special performance of Agatha Christie's mystery “Spider's Web.” Refreshments, including wine, will be available. The cover charge for this event is $10 per person.
While January marks the beginning of the new secular year, we Jews have our own January celebration. This holiday takes place on January 16, 2014, and it is called Tu B’Shevat, the New Year For Trees. Tu B’Shevat is an environmental holiday when we affirm our responsibility for the earth through our actions and choices.
It is traditional for children all over Israel to go into the fields and plant trees. Here in the United States, we can pay for the purchase of a tree or we can eat from one or more of the seven species described in the Bible (Deut 8:8)- wheat, barley, grape (wine), fig, pomegranates, olive (oil) and date (honey). These seven species were the staple foods consumed by the Jewish people in the Land of Israel during biblical times. They contain special holiness, as reflected by the unique blessing recited after eating them, thanking G-d for the goodness of the land. During this month when we celebrate Tu B’Shevat, it is appropriate to ask ourselves if we are doing all we can to help repair the world. Now is the time for us to focus our efforts on taking care of our earth.
Your participation in our Hadassah chapter is vital to our continued success. We want to hear from you, our members. What can we do that would help make you a more active member? Join us in our journey to positively impact the world. Remember, this is your chapter, so please get involved and make it your own!
