Danny's Story
|
Danny came to Israel from the Soviet Union after both of his parents were murdered, just for being Jewish. His aging grandparents, living in Netanya, noted that Danny was not interested in school and would probably fail all his courses. They finally discovered Hadassah Neurim and had him enrolled. Danny signed up for the auto mechanics track, the school's veteran and most popular program, and was taken under the wing of Kobi Avital, the head of the Mechanical Track. The mechanics course appeals to Danny and many boys at Hadassah-Neurim because it brings them close to the world of cars, lets them work physically, and prepares them for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and for a job afterwards. But today's vehicles require more than a wrench and a pair of overalls. New cars all have sophisticated electronic systems which require computer expertise. Students have to pass classes in physics and mechanics. For Danny, this is difficult, but with the support of Avital and others he has managed to pass all his classes. Kobi discovered that Danny was cutting classes to make sure his granparents had food, that one day he had to take his grandmother to the hospital, that he was worried that he'd be all alone in the world. Kobi pledged to him that he and Hadassah-Neurim would always be with him. It is very special to know that Kobi is also a graduate of Hadassah-Neurim. Son of an Ohr Akiva family with seven sisters, he found his way to Hadassah-Neurim to avoid the bad crowds at home. He was in charge of major military equipment in the IDF, came back after graduating and fulfilled many important jobs. He came to work at Hadassah Neurim because, "Helping these kids is my way of giving back to society," he said. For the last several years, Avital has been developing a program with German car manufacturers and donors in Germany to bring students from Hadassah-Neurim for a free auto mechanic course in Germany. But only recently has he developed a program where his students will receive accreditation as Master Mechanics according to a European standard. Danny is participating in this program this summer. If he's successful, he will be recruited by elite military units and subsequently get a good job when he graduates. Hadassah-Neurim has created a life for Danny with a future that he can be proud of. He thanks the women of Hadassah every day of his life! |
