Hadassah National Business Meeting in New Orleans

Marching Into New Orleans
July 14-15, 2009

Although Hadassah did not have a full-scale convention this year, we did come together in New Orleans for a National Business Meeting on July 14-15, 2009. Delegate activities convened on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 3:00 pm (CDT) and concluded on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 2:00 pm.

When Hadassah came "Marching into New Orleans" for the Hadassah National Business meeting, there were 305 Delegates between the ages of 33 and 88, 17 Associates from 30 of the United States and 193 Cities.  There were 23 Region and Big Chapter Presidents, 6 speakers and 2 guests, and everyone celebrated the 100th anniversary of Young Judaea.  There were 8 representatives from Central States Region and we were proud to be there.

We passed a new budget, adopted quotas for next year, and installed a new set of national officers.  We also heard from Professor Nava Ben-Zvi, President of our Hadassah College Jerusalem, and Professor Shlomo Mor-Yosef, Director General, Hadassah Medical Organization. Joyce Rabin, outgoing chair for the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower Campaign, was honored for her accomplishments.

As a region president, Carol Ann Schwartz was introduced “Mardi Gras” style and helped lead the “second line” as we strolled behind the brass band into a fabulous dessert reception.  We all celebrated Young Judaea’s 100th Anniversary at a candle lighting ceremony.  We were fortunate to also hear from Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, as well as Reverend Lonell Wright, All Souls Episcopal Church of New Orleans, who told us about the Young Judaeans who came to his church to help rebuild it.

Since we were having a National Business meeting instead of the usual "fan fare" of a convention, our attendance was expected to be lower than usual.  Central States Region coordinated a dinner on Tuesday evening during the National Business meeting to include those attending from our Region and also Great Plains Region, Upper Midwest Region, Greater Detroit Chapter, Greater Pittsburgh Chapter and Greater Chicago Chapter.  Word spread of our warm and welcoming hospitality and our dinner also included: Greater Washington D.C. Chapter and Central Pacific Coast Region.
