HNews from National

What's New?

The New Year 5774 is almost over.  The secular year 2014 is well underway.   It's a time to reflect on the past year and a time to move forward with new energy and commitment.

One of Hadassah's ongoing goals is to keep our members informed in a way that was impossible before this digital age. Now our communications can be more timely, more thorough, and green in the bargain.
Last year, we created hNews, our digital newsletter, to bring you updated information about new and exciting medical research, our projects here and in Israel, and strategic Hadassah decisions that affect members, and the Jewish community, nationally. Your response has been tremendous!

Starting now, you have access to more medical news, and information about Hadassah activities around the country, at your fingertips.
We've created hMedicine, which carries more stories about our research and patient care than we can bring you in a newsletter. You can access it anytime on www.hadassah.org/hmedicine.
We've also created hCoast-to-Coast, a report on region and chapter activities across the nation. It's a great resource for ideas and tips for your own group. Click on any of the story headlines below or visit www.hadassah.org/hCtoC on our website any time. And don't forget to visit us on facebook at www.facebook.com/hadassah.

Our commitment to you in 5774 is to keep you apprised of all that you accomplish with your support and caring.

What's Happening with Hadassah?

May, 2014

 Hadassah Medical Organization Update

In February, the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) announced that it was filing with the courts for Section 350, the Israeli law that allows for an organization to restructure.

As of May 8, 2014, an agreement was reached.  Please read the details below.

Tentative Agreement Reached With the Government of Israel on HMO

HWZOA and the Government of Israel came to an agreement on a recovery plan for the Hadassah Medical Organization after midnight on Thursday, May 8, 2014. All stakeholders, including the members of the Unions representing HMO employees, and the creditors, including those who work at HMO, will have the opportunity to vote on the plan within the next ten days.

The following was sent by Marcie Natan, Hadassah National President,
to all Hadassah members and supporters on May 9, 2014.

Last night, in negotiations that ended close to midnight, the representatives of Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America (HWZOA), and the Government of the State of Israel agreed on a number of recovery principles for Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO). Under the terms of these principles, the Hadassah Medical Organization will remain under the ownership and control of HWZOA and will be put on the path to financial stability.

It is our hope and belief that with the implementation of these principles, HMO will be strengthened and the partnership with the State of Israel will be reinforced.

The recovery plan requires contribution and sacrifice from all parties. But it also holds the promise of ensuring HMO's continued ability to save lives, which can't be measured in dollars or shekels.

At a press briefing this morning in Tel Aviv, HMO Director General Avigdor Kaplan reminded the press of what a difficult period this has been for a working hospital, but that HMO did not compromise on patient care. He, and a representative of the trustees, also praised the enormous contribution, steadfastness and generosity of HWZOA.

I want to echo his thanks. You have all stood firmly behind our shared mission. And I want to extend a special thanks to Avigdor Kaplan whose courage and tireless effort has gotten us to this day.

I believe that HMO will emerge strengthened and re-invigorated after this period of self-examination. I also believe that HMO and HWZOA will have a restored partnership with the State of Israel.

We will keep you fully updated as we move forward in the next few days when all parties will be called upon to approve the agreement. As Director General Avigdor Kaplan said, "this is the end of the beginning," but it is a beginning nonetheless.

P.S. I would like to also use this opportunity to announce that we are planning a Solidarity Mission to Israel in the middle of June. At this critical time, we would be thrilled to have as many of you as possible join us to express our unshakable commitment to HMO and to the State of Israel. Details to follow.

Tell Congress: Support Pay Equity!
Countless female workers receive unequal pay without knowing it because they could be fired for discussing wages with colleagues. Allowing employees to openly discuss salaries, without fear of losing their jobs, would greatly help female employees learn whether or not they are being paid fairly. Send a letter to Congress to tell them to support pay equity!

Visiting Israel: A Life Changer

Five years ago, Brenda Korff of Great Neck, NY, left her two children home with her husband and visited Israel for the first time on a Hadassah Young Leaders Mission. The group arrived from Poland, which was "damp, depressing, dreary." When they stepped off the plane in Israel, she says, the sun was shining and a beautiful feeling came over her. It has never left. Brenda says she always felt a connection to Israel and Hadassah, but the trip changed her life. "I could see, smell and feel Israel. Now I am a part of Israel. We are part of Israel." Experiencing the hospitals and meeting some of the youth we serve first-hand "makes everything you do with Hadassah—building with your hands, words and money—worthwhile."
