CHECK IT OUT
√ WHAT IS "CHECK IT OUT®"
Check it Out®, is Hadassah’s educational program for high school students and adults to increase their awareness of breast cancer and to learn about detection.
Check it Out® provides participants with the opportunity to learn breast self-examination early, developing good, life-skill habits that could one day save their lives.
√ WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION?
Hadassah’s Check it Out® program is presented in an age appropriate manner with a panel consisting of a Hadassah health volunteer certified in the American Cancer Society Triple Touch II™ program and a breast cancer survivor .
The Hadassah volunteer introduces the program and facilitates the group. The cancer survivor tells her story and stresses the need for self-examination and the importance of early detection. A short video is shown which teaches breast self-examination. The health volunteer teaches self-examination using the video and the aid of a plastic model breast.
Participants are then encouraged to ask questions (anonymously, if they choose) or talk about their experiences related to cancer. It is important to deal with any fears or misconceptions that the students or adults might have.
√ HOW DO SESSIONS WORK?
For students, the 40-50 minute sessions can be held at school assemblies or during a specific class period (i.e. gym or health).
You may choose to hold the sessions in the evening so that parents and faculty can attend as well.
For adults, we try to bring the program to a convenient group environment (i.e. office, community center, or organization meeting).
√ WHAT HANDOUTS ARE GIVEN?
Each participant receives a packet of educational materials they can share with their family or peers. Attendees receive a plastic breast self-examination card and funds permitting, a minigelbreast for detecting lumps.
