JUNE 2013

 Shalom Chevre,

There is so much happening in Hadassah with our local chapters and National Hadassah I don’t know where to start!

You can read about our Hadassah nurse who heads up the Nurses Masters Program at our hospital, who will be speaking in Seattle and Spokane.

You can mark your calendar for our September visit by National Hadassah President, Marcie Natan, to Seattle, Tacoma and Bellingham.

And you will see a Hadassah Happening ad in the JTNews every other issue tooting our horn about the IMPACT Hadassah is making in this world. (See

Nationally, we signed up so many members in 2011 and 2012 that now we are sorting them to the chapters where they live. Read about Project Connect Locally. Know someone who fits this category?

We have a new group at the National Level call PRAZE: Program, Advocacy, Zionism, Education. Here is where you will find our new Heart Healthy program (more in our next issue!), Advocacy statements the day after news is announced, not a week later. A Jewish Genetics program just getting underway and a “Jews from Arab Lands” program in a box – Want to bring it to your chapter? Also Hadassah Brandeis and Hadassah Online will host a live book and author event. Watch for time and date.

We have a target of capturing 30,000 email addresses nationally so if you know of someone who should be on this list, please send it to eganzarski@hadassah.org. We also have a Hadassah Facebook group you can join. Hadassah is definitely in the 21stCentury!

And our great west coast idea of Chai Society ($360 annual gift) has gone National. Read all about it below in It Takes a Village- At Least Seventy-Five Percent of One.

And finally, our PNW website (Hadassah.org/pnw) has been updated so you can find events in your area. And the National website, Hadassah.org, is also being revamped so it’s even easier to navigate.

So, lots happening in Hadassah. Will you join me in celebrating this amazing organization? Look forward to hearing from you –jbayley@hadassah.org.

Save the date for this unique opportunity to hear our National Hadassah President share her passion about Hadassah and HMO.

Global Development Director Here in Seattle

The last week of May, PNW Region had the opportunity for Hadassah’s Global Director of Development, Michael Ostroff to visit the Seattle area. This was a “getting to know the community” meeting. We were able to set up appointments with people in the community to share what Hadassah does both in Israel and in the United States. The meetings were very productive but just the first step in building new relationships.

Michael shared Hadassah’s new campaign “Choose Your Own Impact” which allows contributors to choose which of six areas that you would like to apply their donations. Each impact area gives more detailed information about the types of programs and/or items the funds support. There is something for donors of all giving levels from Grassroots through Major donations. Michael stressed that every donor makes a difference.

We invite you to visit the Hadassah website at www.hadassah.org and click on Donate Now. You will see the various impact areas and can choose the one that is most meaningful to you. I invite you to join me in supporting Hadassah.

If you have any questions, feel free to email or call me.

How would you like to be one of the 247,500 people who help find a cure for ALS or diabetes? How about one of those 247,500 who enable a disadvantaged or disenfranchised student to live in one of Hadassah’s Youth Aliyah villages and graduate from high school ? All these things take a large amount of funds to accomplish but you don’t have to cover the whole amount. What you can do is unite with at least 75% of Hadassah’s membership throughout the country and commit to an annual gift of anywhere from $180 to $5000. Become a new member of Chai Society through an annual gift of $180 - $999. Join the growing group of men and women in the Keepers of The Gate club with an annual commitment of $1000 - $5000. Signing up and making monthly, quarterly or annual payments through your bank account or credit card is as easy as filling out the forms found by clicking on the “donate now” button on the www.hadassah.org website or by clicking on the link HERE  , or downloading  the Chai Society form HERE

Make your impact on any one of Hadassah’s wide range of activities, be it medicine and healthcare, youth and education, advocacy and women’s health issues here at home, completing the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Medical Tower or enhancing the land of Israel through JNF and Israel Bonds. There is something for everyone. Please join me in the village.

For more information on Chai Society, Keepers of the Gate or any other annual giving question please contact Diane Sigel at diane.sigel@hadassah.org or 206-448-5344.

Project Connect Locally is a National initiative that focuses on adult life members who live in your area but who were signed by someone from another geographic location.  In honor of our Centennial we had 60,000 new members sign up in 2011-2012. Now we want to make sure they are in the correct chapters.

Chapters and groups should organize a Project Connect Locally team to outline a process for welcoming and connecting the transferred-in Members. All resources to learn more about this initiative and to obtain the needed materials are on the Intranet. Leaders can access by going to Resources>Membership>Project Connect Locally folder.

Did you sign someone up or gift a membership? We now want to help them find a group/chapter where they live. We have a list of new local members. Will you help us welcome them into your chapter? We need your help contacting and reaching out to our new Hadassah sisters and then inviting them to join you.  Will you call them and add a personal touch or send them an email with your contact information?

Each of these Life Members will be given the benefits of affiliating locally, but it will be their choice if they want to transfer or not. And, only after verbal or written approval is given by the individual can the Unit Leadership process the transfer.

National is hopeful that all Regions/Chapters will participate and the goal is that together we can strengthen and increase support for Hadassah.

For further questions please contact the Membership Department at 800-664-5646 or email projectconnect@hadassah.org.

Locally, you may contact Talby Gelb, Region Membership: Hadassah@gelbfamily.com

Tacoma Hadassah Cooking Class Sunday, May 19, 2013

A new member of our community had recently finished training at the Culinary Institute in Seattle. She wanted to teach a class and Hadassah had to change a program at the last minute.  Laurel Muckey and her sous chef – Keegan (better known as her husband) arrived with loads of supplies ready to pre-prepare some of the foods we would learn about later. Shavuot was the week before so we decided to concentrate on dairy recipes.

  • Wild mushroom and Gruyere Mini cheese in a flaky butter shell
  • Homemade Mascarpone cheese on homemade Cheese Crackers garnished with fresh minced herbs
  • Roasted Beet and Arugula salad with Vinaigrette dressing,
  • Dessert of Cream Puffs filled with vanilla Crème Patisserie topped with warm cider Poached Apples.

No one went home hungry and even got a new set of recipes! If you want a set contact Karen Bloustine at ksbloustine@gmail.com.

The Portland Chapter of Hadassah held a "L'Dor V'Dor" brunch with guest speaker Ruth Tenzer Feldman, author of Blue Thread on Sunday, April 28 at the Elephants Garden Room in NW Portland.  As part of the event, Jacquie Bayley and Wendy Comstock installed the new executive board for the Portland Chapter: Tamar Boussi, Beth Kaye, Suzanne Kent and Shoshanna Lansberg.  Tamar Boussi then introduced the author who gave the attendees some insight into her historical research for the book which explores the women's suffrage movement in Oregon.
