A new education program designed for girls aged 10 - 14 to promote increased self esteem and positive body image in an aim to nurture a healthier generation of girls and young women
Project Chairs: Shirley Robbins

Organized by The Friends of Literacy, this used book and media sale benefits greatly from the efforts of Hadassah volunteers over a period of 5 months (January-May.) Volunteers sort books in preparation for the annual sale. We have HADASSAH DAY at the sale. Hadassah benefits by receiving funds from the sale for each hour a Hadassah Volunteer works. Hadassah volunteers, working in 2.5 hour shifts, run the sale throughout the day. All of this takes place at Laurel Park Place Mall in Livonia.

Hadassah is currently collecting used unwanted cell phones. They will be given to Haven, counseling and medical center for abused women and children. Haven will have the phones reconditioned. Haven's clients can then use the phones free of charge to call 911 and Haven. Please drop off your unwanted cell phones during business hours at Hadassah House.

Hadassah, in collaboration with Grace/Sinai DMC and the American Cancer Society, is continuing to present a breast awareness/cancer detection program in area high schools. The 45-minute program educates 11th and 12th grade girls about the importance of regular and correct breast self-examination. Testicular Self-Exam is taught to 11th and 12th grade boys. Hadassah volunteers are invited to: 1) contact area high schools in order to schedule this vital program; and 2) help prepare Check It Out information packets to distribute to students. Members of Hadassah's Nurses Council take part in each high school program.

Hadassah and community volunteers of all ages are creating very cuddly rag dolls used in "medical play" for sick and/or injured children needing either in-patient or out-patient care. Dolls are donated to most of the hospitals in the Metro Detroit area. Volunteers are invited to trace, cut, pin, sew, stuff, dress, and distribute dolls for the children to decorate and keep. Most project tasks do not require specialized sewing skills or training. Doll-making workshops are scheduled at Hadassah House every Thursday, 9:00 am - noon. Volunteers are urged to call ahead in case of workshop cancellations. Children have participated to earn Girl Scout badges and mitzvah credit for Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation. Please, no children under the age of eight.

READ*WRITE*NOW! Partners Tutoring Program
Hadassah volunteers help improve literacy skills. At present our involvement is with elementary schools in the following school districts: Greater West Bloomfield Schools, Ealy, Green, and Roosevelt; Ferndale Schools, Roosevelt and Kennedy; Farmington Schools, Wood Creek and Longacre; Walled Lake Schools; Oakley Park. Time Commitment is one hour weekly during the school year.

On a continuing basis, Hadassah welcomes members' contributions of unused hotel-size toiletries and sundries: e.g., soap, lotion, shampoo, shower caps, etc. The items collected at Hadassah House are donated to social service agencies, such as the Lighthouse of Oakland County.

The Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah greatly appreciates your assistance in promoting and participating in the above mentioned projects. The members of our community who benefit from these items and services truly appreciate all our efforts.
