Message from the President

Dear Hadassah Friends,

The theme for Hadassah’s 97th National Convention in Las Vegas was Inspire, Imagine, Ignite. We all felt the passion. The possibilities. The spark. However, another “I” had an even more significant presence. Israel was on the mind of all participants, as the conflict in Gaza escalated. Unfortunately, a fifth “I” raised its head for me. I became IRATE. The reporting of the conflict on most major news outlets lacked context and fairness. To combat this media bias, it is up to each and every one of us to inform ourselves and others about the situation.

I urge you to use social media to spread the facts. Like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/HadassahNewEngland, follow us on Twitter at @HadassahOrg or @HadassahNNER. Find Hadassah on Pinterest, LinkedIn and Google+. Participate in the rallies to show your support of Israel, and talk to your children and grandchildren about Israel,  Click here to see a list of relevant links regarding Israel.

By the way, NNER is in the process of arranging social media training. You will hear about this opportunity if we have your email address (please send to hne@hadassah.org.)

Watch the fascinating interview between Ari Shavit, author of My Promised Land and Bret Stephens of the Wall Street Journal as they discussed Israel’s position in the Middle East at www.hadassah.org/NNER .

Hadassah has an ongoing series on Zionism you can attend from the comfort of your home. Each session has a different slant and speaker. The next event, ”Practical Zionism— What Surviving Terror Teaches You” will be on Tuesday, Monday, September 8th at 7:30 PM, with Sarri Singer, Founder & Director of Strength to Strength.

Hadassah has emerged from the HMO crisis with an unprecedented, historical agreement with the Israeli government. We are truly poised, for the first time in many years, to support a hospital that will be financially sustainable.  Members of the convention were honored to hear Dr. Avi Rivkind, renowned trauma specialist from our hospital, inform us about the situation in Israel. We then met Shachar Israel, a young girl who came to Hadassah Hospital with leukemia. She is now healthy and leads a normal life. There was not a dry eye in the house as we shared her becoming a Bat Mitzvah.

I arrived in Las Vegas and remembered how uncomfortable I feel with the culture of excess and gambling on the strip. I left Las Vegas and convention remembering all that I love about Hadassah and her women.

We have a tremendous lineup of programming for the coming months. Please read this issue carefully and mark dates in your calendar. Everyone is welcome at every event, whether in your own chapter, NNER or HNE.
