Delivered at Books on the Beach, August 12, 2014
A few short weeks ago, a delegation of 4 of us from RI traveled to Hadassah’s 97th Convention, the theme of which was “Inspire, Imagine, Ignite” and all of these did happen. In their planning, nobody at Hadassah would have foreseen that Israel would have been in the midst of a war with Hamas, Operation Protective Edge, while we celebrated Hadassah’s success in Las Vegas. We were inspired to do even more for Hadassah, we imagined a time of peace for Israel, and we were ignited with hope for the future.
Hadassah recently signed a new partnership with the state of Israel to ensure that Hadassah Medical Organization will continue to be the beacon of hope for excellent care in the Middle East. Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, is a volunteer organization that inspires a passion for - and a commitment to its partnership with the land and the people of Israel. Hadassah empowers us - its members and supporters, as well as youth in Israel and America through opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy and Jewish continuity. Hadassah physicians are treating Cystic Fibrosis, are researching and treating melanoma, MS and ALS and are studying the healing of the skeletal system in trauma patients. Together, we will build a new future for the nation. Hadassah’s commitment to Israel, Judaism and Zionism will continue.
It is events like this fabulous fourth Books on the Beach that allow Hadassah to continue its life-saving efforts at both Hadassah’s Mt. Scopus and Ein Kerem Hospitals, along with our Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower, which was our gift to Israel on the occasion of Hadassah’s 100th birthday in 2012. This tower has 19 stories, there are 500 patient beds, and 5 floors underground with a total of 20 operating rooms. This will be the most advanced medical facility in all of the Middle East.
But to date, 13 of those 20 operating rooms still await completion; they will be state of the art once they are completed. It is our task to finish equipping and furnishing this Tower. In fact, Hadassah North East, of which we are a part, is working together” to raise $250,000 to equip one neurosurgical operating room.
In mid-September, you will receive a call from one of our members to request funds to help to fund the Tower and this operating suite. And then on November 2, we will be celebrating at a Chai luncheon and you will soon hear more about that! (See Event page for details.)
Hadassah has many paths to giving for our various projects. Your support today and at other events is a part of that path....
Dr. Avi Rivkind spoke with us at Convention about some of the work of his trauma team, the first Emergency Trauma Unit in Israel. Many soldiers from Operation Protective Edge have been, and are still being treated at Hadassah. Victims of recent terrorist attacks in Jerusalem are also being treated at our hospitals. Researchers from Hadassah improve the lives of Israelis, of our Palestinian neighbors, of our friends, and of our children and grandchildren. Hadassah’s physicians and nurses care for patients in our facilities, and they also share their life-saving techniques around the world, in places like Boston after the Marathon bombing; and they have also played critical roles in other mass casualty events around the world – in places like Kenya, Thailand, Haiti and the Congo.
In these days of critical need in Israel, it is even more important for us to support Hadassah, where with our help, the best care is available. Please answer the call to make a donation to Hadassah; there will be many calls in the next weeks and months; from National President Marci Natan, and from members of our chapter. Hadassah must continue to be able to provide the highest level of care for our brothers and sisters in Israel. I know that you will continue to respond generously. Hadassah needs all of us. Thank you.
