Message from the President
Welcome to our Chapter website! It's been in the planning & dreaming stages for a while, but here it is - a work in progress! While some of us are new to emails and surfing the web, we all look forward to navigating our new website.
Rochester is proud to be one of the oldest, continuous Chapters of Hadassah. You may already know that Hadassah started in 1912, with the Rochester Chapter beginning in 1914. With a look back to our proud Hadassah history and a look forward to our new website we invite you to come along. We are connected to each other in friendship and commitment to the wonderful projects of Hadassah in Israel and in the United States.
Our Rochester Chapter has 850+ members. Of those, 630 are Life members. We also have 118 Associate members in Rochester. We have a very strong and active group of women. Every month we have our Chapter board meetings and our three book groups. Our members make almost monthly visits to Foodlink to help keep our local food pantries stocked. We also make frequent Check It Out visits to schools. We donate school supplies, books, hats, scarves, and gloves to our 5th grade mitzvah class at School 25. We get together to make dolls to donate to the pediatric patients at Strong Hospital.
The Chapter opened 2009-2010 with a dinner and talk by Judge John Ark at Brio's Restaurant. Our annual card party brunch in October at Midvale Country Club brought over 80 women together to play cards, Scrabble, Rummikub, and Mah Jongg. In November, we were honored to host Osnat Moskowitz, the Director of Development for Hadassah Hospital, Jerusalem. Many of us met Osnat at dinner, at a book club, at breakfast, or at her talk about "Diversity in Action" at Hadassah Hospital.
Our December potluck dinner featured Bonnie Abrams on guitar and voice. January brought us brunch and Hadassah talent at Midvale Country Club. In February, we participated in Gilda's Walk for Wellness, an annual community outreach program. Our March program honored Tillie Rose, our very first Chapter President. This annual education program, open to the community, had its keynote address delivered by Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and included a panel of experts to discuss women's risk for cancer.
April was our annual Fashion Show featuring fashions from SteinMart. In May we had a theater party at the Jewish Community Center to see everyone's favorite musical, "Fiddler on the Roof." Installation of Officers for 2010-2011 occurred on May 17, and in June, we will have our Medical Center Party at Irondequoit Country Club.
Our fund raising includes our award-winning cookbook, Hadassah greeting cards, Hadassah T-shirts, bracelets, entertainment books, certificates, Fair Trade coffee, and more. We meet at country clubs, restaurants, homes, the JCC, the Summit, Rustic Village Clubhouse, East Avenue Dentistry, and the Gables. We meet in small groups for coffee and brainstorming and planning, and in larger groups for our meetings and programs. Last year we made more than our quota of $93,000.00 and we are hoping to do the same this year.
We are part of the UMAR, the Upper Mid-Atlantic Region, which has it's own website and bulletin. Our own bulletin is beginning to be available online, as we look for ways to cut costs and be more environmentally friendly.
