Associates Success Stories Around the Country

Don Sacarob, VP, National Committee of Hadassah Associates, made a presentation to newly elected Congressman, Gerry Connolly of the 11th Congressional District of Virginia.

From Northern Virginia: Don Sacarob, VP, National Committee of Hadassah Associates, made a presentation to newly elected Congressman, Gerry Connolly of the 11th Congressional District of Virginia. The presentation included his Associate pin, a beautifully matted and framed Associate certificate and a welcome letter from our Hadassah National President.

Congressman Connolly was the guest speaker at a fundraising luncheon of the Northern Virginia Chapter which was attended by Hadassah Associates and members.

He was very moved by the presentation and stated his delight that as a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, he has been to Israel several times and feels a kinship with Hadassah and that going to Hadassah would have a new meaning for him. He added that the certificate "would be permanently on display in his Capitol Hill office in a most prominent place."

From Houston: Itzhak Perlman - New Associate! The Houston Chapter of Hadassah wasn't just fiddlin' around when they welcomed recent guest of honor, violinist Itzhak Perlman, to the annual Keepers of the Gate and Founders' reception. They made Perlman, born at Hadassah Medical Center, an Associate for life--just in time to serenade Queen Elizabeth II. Way to go Houston!

The Fairfield Chapter, Connecticut Region, invited every husband and a few personal friends who do not have spouses in the chapter to a brunch with a terrific speaker on "Fitness at any Age" and the Associates Every Step Counts DVD. They netted 20 new Associates, most of them friends of the Chair and his committee, and one new Keeper of the Gate. They find that it is easier to enroll new Associates if they approach the men rather than asking the women to make their husbands Associates.

The Norwich Chapter, Connecticut Region, a chapter of 240 members, has 54 Associates, 24 of them enrolled last year. They hold an evening enrollment event each year at various locations. The theme is "Looking for a Few Good Men."

The L.E.A. Chapter, Desert-Mountain Region, holds an annual Summer Salmon Social for families that honors Associates. The Associates grill the salmon and present current information on Associates local activities and National initiatives. Every Associate attends for free. Attendance is always very high. In the last two years, the event was hosted by the family of a young Rabbi Associate who invites all the Associates to do the motzi. The men who were not included were motivated to enroll, and 70 new Associates enrolled in the last two years!

Linda Block of the Houston Chapter, Greater Southwest Region, was on a non-Hadassah Mission to Israel which visited Hadassah Hospital on the last day of the trip. Linda was the tour guide on the bus ride and spoke about all of Hadassah's projects, some of its history and mentioned "the guys who love us and support the wonderful work we do, called Associates." One person raised his hand and said, "I'd like to do that!" Others followed and, in around three minutes, there were nine new Associates! After returning home there were more new Associates from that Mission and two from the Houston Women of Courage Luncheon. She brought in 17 new Associates, all because she asked them.

Norman Walter of the Sabra Chapter, Florida Central Region, accepted the invitation to chair the Associates group and then formed a steering committee of nine men. They invite both men and women to their meetings. The Associate Chairman spoke at Hadassah general and board meetings about making the men in their lives, children and grandchildren, Associates. They also advertised for new Associates and publicized their events in the chapter's monthly publication. Their monthly programs, which include the Associates, are varied, well attended and free.

In the Orlando Chapter, Florida Central Region, Associates brochures are placed on each table at Hadassah meetings. Four new Associates joined through solicitation at meetings. The chapter hosts an annual brunch to honor Associates and this past year enrolled seven new Associates.

The Northern New Jersey Region held its second annual Associates Dessert Reception. This year the event was held at a very nice hotel on a Saturday evening with live entertainment, a comedian, and was a sellout. The cost of the event was underwritten by a bank. Both years the event has had attendance of about 150 including a significant number of prospective Associates. There is follow up on those who are not yet Associates. One woman made her six grandsons Associates. The venue made it happen.

Greater Springfield Chapter, Western New England Region, reports that in making a push for new Associates they created a tee-shirt that says, "It takes a REAL man to be a Hadassah Lady." They have brought in seven new Associates with this campaign. In addition, they visited Hadassah Hospital on a non-Hadassah mission wearing their tee-shirts. What great visibility!

Wilmington Chapter, Northern Seaboard Region, Associates held a brunch in a private home with a special guest speaker on "Patient Safety: How to Stay Healthy When You Have to Go to the Hospital." Non-Associates were welcomed and the brunch fee was waived for anyone who enrolled that day.

In the Upper Midwest Region, President Carole Rosenthal reports that men who became Associates were invited to attend the Region's Health Education Day, Zay Gesunt, without paying the $40 registration fee. Five men took advantage of the offer. Expenses for the event were covered by the registration fee and grants as well.
