On repairing the world
In these months, we are all overwhelmed by images of failed banks, home foreclosures and job losses. We are living in a complex, global environment and frequently, it is difficult to imagine how we can possibly wrap our arms around the idea of tikkun olam – repairing the world. However, it may be precisely at times such as these that we need to return to basics - doing our small part to help repair the world – an enduring concept in Hadassah and in all our lives.
Now may also be the perfect time to consider our environment and our natural world. During this month when we celebrate Tu B’Shevat, it is appropriate to ask ourselves if we are doing all we can to help repair the world. We encourage you to plant a tree in Israel with the Jewish National Fund through Hadassah. You will find instructions on ordering tree certificates in this newsletter. A single tree absorbs one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.
Another thing you can do is to provide us with your updated email address. GKC wants to keep you informed on all our ongoing events in a timely and efficient way. It is wasteful of time, money, and our precious natural resources to mail out paper flyers for every program. We realize that not all of our members use email. If you have a friend or relative who does, consider asking to “borrow” that email address so that we can keep you up-to-date on all Hadassah events. We will continue to send invitations to major events in the mail and to inform the community of our events through the Kansas City Jewish Chronicle. Our new chapter website also has information on all upcoming events. Please visit us at:: http://kansascity.hadassah.org.
You are certainly aware that Hadassah has launched a 100-day, 100,000 donor appeal in the wake of the Madoff financial scandal, which has resulted in significant losses for Hadassah. But we remain strong and more committed to our life-enhancing projects than ever. We will be calling our membership within the next 90 days to ask you to join in this special appeal if you have not already done so. You will find more information on this appeal in this newsletter.
As you give generously to Hadassah, so do we strive to give back to our members by providing high-quality programming in health care, education, civics, and Israel and Zionist affairs. Most of our chapter programs are free or involve only a nominal cost to cover expenses. We have an active study group, a moms-and-tots playgroup, and new in February, a book club and two Hebrew language classes (beginner and advanced levels).
In these tumultuous times, even as the larger world is stressed, we can each take the time to acknowledge our responsibility to help in repairing our own world. Through simple acts, each one of us can make a discernable difference. Rabbi Tarfon famously stated in Pirkei Avot, “It is not your obligation to complete the task, but neither are you free to desist from it.”
