Speak Out for Tolerance!

October 13, 2010
In response to recent acts of homophobic bullying and subsequent loss of life, Hadassah joins communities across the country in speaking out against prejudice, harassment and inequity. Hadassah has long been an advocate for equal and civil rights, authoring policy statements in opposition to anti-Semitism and racism and in support of the Equal Rights Amendment and equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LBGT) Americans.

As Jewish women, Hadassah members have a special understanding of the dangers of bigotry, having also been targets of discrimination and violence. Thanks to the lobbying efforts of Hadassah and our partner organizations last year, federal hate crimes law was expanded to include protections based on real or perceived gender, gender identity, sexual orientation and disability.

Keshet, a national grassroots organization that works for the full inclusion of LGBT Jews in Jewish life, launched Do Not Stand Idly By: A Jewish Community Pledge to Save Lives. Hadassah encourages you to speak out for tolerance and to sign pledges like this in your community.
