Education Day 2009

Sunday, January 25, 2009
9:45 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

On Sunday, January 25, 2009, over 50 area women gathered at Rockwern Academy to participate in 2009 Education Day, “A Self-Portrait: Images of Jewish Women Today”. Jointly presented by Cincinnati Chapter of Hadassah and Jewish Family Service, the program featured an interactive theatrical presentation and workshops on the history of Jewish women in various fields. Program chairs were Gilda Schwartz and Bobbi Handwerger from Hadassah and Linda Kean and Sandee Golden from Jewish Family Service.

Cincinnati Chapter President Tobe Snow welcomed the group in the Boymel Sanctuary at 10:00 a.m. The opening program featured Amy Faust, a Cincinnati based actress, acting teacher and private coach, in “Images of Jewish Women Today: A Theatrical Overview”. In her presentation, she focused on four famous women in the 20th Century who were inspirational leaders in their fields.

After the opening program, participants chose between two interactive breakout sessions, “Jewish Women in Arts and Literature” with Amy Faust, or “Jewish Women in Religion” with Amy Greenbaum, a graduate of Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati and former director of the Hillel Foundation at Miami University. A second breakout session offered “Jewish Women in Media” with Joyce Kamen, an Emmy and Telly winning writer and producer and Principal of Kamen Creative, LLC., and “Jewish Women in Law and Politics” with Judge Heather Stein Russell, a judge to the Hamilton County Municipal Court.

After a kosher box lunch, Linda Kean, Director of Family Life Education and the Alan R. Mack Parents Center of Jewish Family Service, led “Jewish Women in Their Significant Relationships: A Rosh Hodesh Celebration Honoring Women’s Strengths”. The program included a Rosh Hodesh candle-lighting, a guided meditaion, poetry readings and a creative activity where women made collages out of words describing their positive traits.
