Donor Luncheon 4-14-10
On Wednesday, April 14, 2010, Cincinnati Chapter of Hadassah held its annual Donor Luncheon at the Kenwood Country Club. Ariella Perlman, daughter of renown violinist Itzhak Perlman, performed a flute recital, and Adele Gutterman and her daughter Renee Sandler were honored for their outstanding contributions to Hadassah.
The event began at 11:30 a.m. as guests arrived and mingled in the spacious lobby. Jewelry creations by Ariella Perlman and Rita Rothenberg were available for purchase, as were Hadassah gift cards, Israeli teas and Vazu reusable vases.
At 12 noon, Ariella Perlman performed a varied and delightful program, accompanied by pianist Heather MacPhail. She opened with two movements from a Sonata by Georg Philip Telemann (1681-1767), followed by an unusual contemporary piece called Arcana by Elizabeth Brown (1953- ). Arcana had been commissioned in 2004 by Ariella's parents, Itzhak and Toby Perlman, for her 21st birthday and featured a recorded accompaniment of a theremin, an eerie-sounding electronic instrument, played on an iPod. Ariella was warm and engaging as she spoke to the audience between pieces. The next selection, Theme from Schindler's List by John Williams, was an arrangement of the award-winning soundtrack that her father recorded for the movie. Her final selection was a movement from the Sonata for Flute and Piano by Francis Poulenc (1899-1963).
After the concert, everyone moved into the Dining Room for a sumptuous buffet lunch that included salad, baked salmon, noodle kugel and tuna and egg salad. Everyone received a Donor Program Book, which included lists of donors and biographies of the honorees and performers. Those who gave a Plus Gift in honor of Hadassah Young Judaea's 100th Anniversary received beautiful 8 x 10 personalized certificates.
Hadassah Central States Region President Carol Ann Schwartz led the singing of Hatikvah and the Star Spangled Banner. Michele Sandler led the Invocation, and Jonah Sandler made the HaMotzi blessing over the bread. Tobe Snow, President of Cincinnati Chapter, welcomed everyone and spoke about the new slate of officers who will be installed in September. Bobbi Handwerger and Sharon Casper will be the new Co-Presidents.
Paula Jarnicki introduced the two honorees, Adele Gutterman and Renee Sandler, and spoke about their many accomplishments and contributions to Cincinnati Chapter of Hadassah. She presented each of them with a beautiful certificate in honor of the occasion. Then, Adele and Renee thanked all the attendees for coming.
Finally, Donor Committee Chair Ghita Sarembock thanked everyone who contributed to the event. Rita Rothenberg conducted the raffle drawing, asking various people from around the room to draw winning tickets from a basket. Among the lucky winners was Ariella Perlman's husband, Robert Johnson, who won a dinner certificate to Embers Restaurant.
After all the prizes were awarded, Rita Rothenberg spoke about a current fundraiser at Mimi's Cafe in Mason. She held up a flyer, which when turned in for dinner on Monday-Wednesday nights, Mimi's will donate 15% of each sale to Hadassah
through April 30th.
