Urge your Senators to Support America’s Climate Security Act (S. 3036)

Last year, a United Nations-sponsored report, reflecting the collaboration of more than 2,500 scientists from 130 countries, concluded that climate change is “unequivocal,” and most scientists agree that the build-up of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere is the primary cause. It is now impossible to ignore the adverse effects– including melting polar ice, rising sea levels, changed precipitation patterns and loss in biodiversity. If we do not reduce carbon emissions, global temperatures may rise by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the 21st century, causing dramatic and irreversible ramifications for all of planet Earth.

Climate change also threatens America’s national security. The environmental consequences of global warming will spark unprecedented human migrations, increased border tensions, and conflicts over essential resources. Our continued dependence on foreign oil compounds these national security concerns. The more we depend on carbon-emitting fossil fuels, the more U.S. foreign policy is at the whim of nations that do not share our values, including our loyalty to Israel.

The first week of June, the Senate is expected to vote on America’s Climate Security Act (S. 3036). This bipartisan bill, sponsored by Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Joseph I. Lieberman (I-CT) and John W. Warner (R-VA), establishes a mandatory, but flexible policy that caps emissions from major carbon-releasing sources such as factories, vehicles, and buildings, and sets up a trading program for companies to buy and sell emissions allowances. This “cap-and-trade” system is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 70% below current levels by the year 2050.

Hadassah has long supported environmental protection and reduced dependence on foreign oil based on the Jewish imperatives to preserve the Earth’s resources and to heal the world for future generations.

Action Needed: Please call or e-mail your Senators with the following message:

“I urge you to vote YES on America’s Climate Security Act (S. 3036) when it is brought to the Senate floor.  By reducing carbon emissions and increasing clean energy production, this legislation will reduce our energy dependence, curb global warming and strengthen our national security.”

Senators can be reached through the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. To send an instant e-mail message to your Senators or to learn more about other issues of concern to Hadassah, please visit the Legislative Action Center (LAC) on our website at www.hadassah.org/actionalert.
