The Athens chapter of Hadassah is the result of efforts initiated by three Athens women in May 2003. Over the last five years our chapter has grown from 25 to 66 members, ages 4 to 94, including 34 Life Members. Many of our women are working or retired from professions in various fields such as social work, teaching at different levels, including higher education, medicine, counseling, hospital administration, library science, etc. One of our goals is to attract younger women to our chapter and we anticipate programs that would include family activities for those with young children. Many friendships have been formed through our Hadassah meetings. As a matter of fact, one member found a cousin at a meeting that she hadn’t seen in decades.
Our chapter usually holds meetings in the homes of members from September to May. We’ve had interesting and educational programs which included issues in women’s health, brunches with speakers on various topics, (the most recent on stem cell research), a Women’s Seder co-jointly held with the Temple Sisterhood, a Coldwater Creek fashion show, with our members as models, Israeli concert with an Israel-themed pre-concert dinner, an annual yard sale and a very successful 5K. This year we’ll continue to have programs exploring various topics which include the Israeli Consul to the southeast, Reda Mansour, who will share his poetry, a genetics panel discussion, a brunch and lecture by a notable Jewish female lawyer, book club discussion, film, silk painting, Champagne and chocolate social and another 5K fundraiser, just to mention a few.
