The Charleston chapter began in 1921, just nine years after Hadassah was officially founded. Our geographic reach is the South Carolina Tri-County area encompassing Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties. As one of the country's earliest and busiest port cities, Charleston has a long and strong history within the Jewish Community. With Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Chabad congregations, we are extremely proud of the diversity of our Hadassah members.
Our chapter currently has more than 500 members, including more than 450 life members, 25 major donors (including both Founders and Keepers of the Gate), and 80 associates.
Girls Night Out programs, appealing more often to younger members, tend to spring from the creative energies of our leadership on an ad hoc basis. Family programs such as Havdalah services and Chanukah in the Square (co-sponsored by other local Jewish organizations) are great ways for whole families to be part of our Hadassah family.
Hadassah created the community-wide program The Woman Who Makes a Difference. During this annual event, the Sisterhoods of all three local congregations, the Charleston Jewish Federation Women’s Division, the Charleston chapter of National Council of Jewish Women, and the Charleston chapter of Hadassah each honors one of their finest members. This coming together of the broader Jewish community is always a fun event – particularly since there is so much to celebrate by women who may be members of three or even four of the groups.
