2009 Donor Event
October 25, 2010
Univerity Club, Lansing, MI

We were delighted to welcome Rachel S. Harris, an Assistant-Professor of Comparative and World Literature and Jewish Studies at the University of Illinois. Her research interests include the role of suicide in Israeli Literature on which she wrote her doctorate at the University of Oxford. The topic was  "Jerusalem: City of Gold in Hebrew Literature." Jerusalem has had a long and violent history. As an imaginary location and a physical destination for three religions it has featured as the subject of great poetry. Jerusalem can be a dream, a lover, a spritual homeland and a traffic nightmare. This talk presents some of the many hebrew poetic texts that have tried to capture this city's essence.
