A Message from Your President
Dear Members and Friends:
It seems fitting to write my first message as an incoming president on the eve of the New Year—a time
of new beginnings, new programs, and endless opportunities.
Hadassah’s brand of practical Zionism is all about founding and building. In fact, Hadassah laid the
groundwork for Israel’s health care system and founded Hadassah Academic College, Youth Aliyah/
Children at Risk, and Young Judea. Moreover, during the centennial event in Jerusalem, Hadassah
celebrated the dedication of the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower in the Hadassah Ein Kerem
Hospital Campus, Hadassah’s largest and most ambitious building project in more than fifty years.
At our N’awlins’ chapter, we plan and build in our own way. Over the course of the last year, we had a stellar
fundraising event to help cure breast cancer. Our Woman of the Year was honored at the Southern Region meeting.
Our screening of the film Inside Israel, which pays homage to Israel’s historical accomplishments and the nation’s
infinite potential, was well attended by members of the Jewish community, and we have seen increased participation
in our Readers’ Circle.
I am excited about the array of events and programs that we have planned for the upcoming year. We intend to
build on our past accomplishments by expanding our programming, participation, and contributions to Hadassah’s
overall mission. Please check the Hadassah bulletin and the emails for information on our 2014 events and mark
As we begin a New Year, let us renew our commitment to Hadassah, Israel, and our community.
MernaLyn, “The Diet Diva” and author
of The 10 Second Diet, will be guest
speaker at a special meeting cohosted
by the New Orleans Chapter
of Hadassah and Congregation Beth
Israel on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. at
Beth Israel, 4004 W. Esplanade Ave.,
Metairie. The meeting is free and open
to all, and it would be a great time to
bring friends who are curious about
“It’s not just about what you put into
your body, but what you put out into
the world – tikkun olam,” according to MernaLyn, who will
sign books at the meeting.
“The word ‘diet’ refers not only to the foods we eat, but also
to the life we live,” says the author, who has been a guest
on ABC, CNN and Fox News, and national and international
radio shows, including Bloomberg Radio with an audience
of 18.5 million listeners. MernaLyn was a featured author at
New York’s Book Expo and the 61st Annual JCC Book Fair.
“The healthy, insightful and unique technique that makes
weight loss so quick and easy with The 10 Second Diet
can also be applied to other aspects of life; so it is for
successfully losing weight and successfully living life,”
according to MernaLyn. “The 10 Second Diet reveals the way
to reverse the obesity epidemic in adults and children, and
also how to restore civility and improve humanity to our
ailing society ... in as little as 10 seconds!”
MernaLyn is an enlightening, intelligent, articulate
speaker with a charismatic personality who is motivating
and inspiring to audiences on her national book tour.
As a former professional international model and a
Shakespearean actress at The Globe Theatre with a
recurring role on an ABC prime time sitcom, MernaLyn
has an eclectic background. She was a research assistant
at Wayne State University’s Psychology Department and
has lectured to hundreds of young people from The Boy
Scouts of America to The Twenty-First Century Club about
nutrition and personal certitude.
Through her humanitarian efforts, MernaLyn has been
named the Alzheimer Association’s Ambassador with
her tireless dedication over the past decade in getting
legislation passed and raising community awareness of this
disease. She donates a generous percentage of the proceeds
from every book sold at book signings to the Alzheimer’s

Without a doubt, The New Orleans Chapter of Hadassah’s 2013 “Bra-Veaux!”
ranked among the most sparkling events of the season, and must be considered
a success by any measure. Held at the Crescent City Auction Gallery, it helped to
increase breast cancer awareness, while supporting the groundbreaking research
at Hadassah Hospitals in Jerusalem.
Celebrity Master of Ceremonies, actor Rob Steinberg (the man who saves the
slave in Steve McQueen’s acclaimed film, 12 Years a Slave), and the Siren Sisters
singers donated their time and talents. Host and auctioneer par excellence,
Adam Lambert, expertly led bidders through an auction of more than 40
original artworks by the following fabulous local artists: Charlie Atherton
& Melanie Landau, Jane Berins, Jennifer Blanchard,
Andrew Brott, Libby Carver & Sheila Connolly, Luis
Colmenares, Catherine Cooper-Stratton, Maggie Covert,
Yvette Gautreaux Cutrer, Robin Daning, Karen Oser
Edmunds, Madelaine Feldman, M.D., Corey Goldman,
Jono Goodman, Kathleen Olson Grumich, Kiki Huston,
Sharlene Jacobi, Nancy Kancher, Aidi Kansas, Katherine
Klimitas, Christine Ledoux, Jennifer Lindsley & P.H.
Fred, Robin Levy, Linda McDermott, Caren Nowak,
Terrance Osborne, Joshua Mann Pailet, George Rodrigue,
Josephine Sacabo, Reda Scher, M.P. Sharfman, Tracy
Soldevila, Cara-Lyn Regenbogen Solomon, Leona Stich,
Susan Walker, Heather Weathers, Clifton Webb, Lee
White, and Lynn Zakem.
Many of the artworks were breast-related, and created
specifically for Bra-Veaux!
More than 30 amateur art bras by Hadassah members were displayed and judged
by attendees for prettiest, funniest and most creative. Winners of the amateur
categories were Emily Palit and Kendra Reade (Prettiest); Gail Pesses (Funniest);
and Vivian Cahn (Most Creative).
Attendees sipped signature “Bra-tini” cocktails and dined on tasty appetizers and
desserts created by Honeybee Catering, and many left with art and raffle prizes.
The décor that was coordinated by Gail Pesses sparkled, with an ice sculpture in
the form of a nude female torso carved by Ice Dragon Ice Sculptures, twinkling
lights, pink and silver potted trees decorated with miniature brassiere cut-outs,
and bejeweled and beaded bustiers.
Notecards with images of many of the artworks, taken by
photographer Jacqueline Kay Dallimore, are available from
Hadassah. Contact Marisa Kahn at email@example.com to
The indefatigable work of Co-Chairs Carole Neff and Marisa

enjoyed by all, successfully raising funds and spirits in support
of a great cause.

The Hadassah Readers’ Circle will hold a special
meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21, from 7 – 9 p.m., in
honor of our associates. We will discuss Boychiks
in the Hood: Travels in the Hasidic Underground, by
Robert Eisenberg. All Hadassah members, associates
and prospective members are encouraged to come!
The meeting will take place at the home of Chick &
Reda Scher, 2135 State St., New Orleans (RSVP: 504-
“Blessed with a thoroughly secular sensibility, a
lively sense of humor, and the Yiddish mother
tongue, Eisenberg takes us deep into the heart of
the contemporary Hasidic world, illuminates the
esoteric, and makes the exotic familiar,” said Rodger
Kamenetz, author of The Jew in the Lotus.
Boychiks in the Hood is your passport to the Hasidic
“underworld” — a destination far different from
popular expectations. Eisenberg hangs out with
an ex-Deadhead in Antwerp, makes a pilgrimage
to the grave of the revered Rebbie Nachman in the
Ukraine, munches mini-bagels with rollerblading
kosher butchers in Minnesota, discovers the last
remaining religious Jews in Poland, talks sex with a
karate-champion-turned-rabbi in Israel, and more.
Simultaneously respectful and hilarious, Boychiks in
the Hood is a surprising and unforgettable journey
through the world’s flourishing Hasidic communities
that reveals this vibrant tradition as never before,
according to reviews.
Have you discovered a great book in 2013? At
this meeting, we will select the books that we will
read this spring, so we’re asking for each person
to bring at least one suggestion —title, author and
your thoughts about why the book would provoke
lively discussion. We are also looking for hosts for
upcoming Readers’ Circle meetings, which will be
on Thursdays this spring. If you’re interested in
hosting, please contact Fran Simon, marketing/
communications VP, at 504-858-3833.

Dear Hadassah Members, Associates and Friends,
As my presidency draws to a close, I have taken some time to evaluate all that we have
accomplished as a chapter during the past two and a half years. As I reflect on the legacy
I will be leaving behind as president, one of the initiatives I am most excited about is the
Hadassah Heroines & Heroes program. This “pet” project is important to me because
it provides an opportunity for every member or associate to become an integral part of
Hadassah’s mission. By committing to make an annual donation to Hadassah of just
$100, you can join this critically important group of Hadassah supporters.
As with many of our fundraising initiatives, we have created a fabulous piece a jewelry – a
charm bracelet – that is available for purchase exclusively by Heroines/Heroes. (I’m certain our heroes have
someone in their lives who will want this!) The charm bracelet is unique to the New Orleans chapter, and best
of all, each year that you continue your commitment to the Heroines/Heroes program, you will be able to add
a charm until your bracelet is complete.
The Hadassah Heroines & Heroes program is open to all new and existing
members and associates, and we encourage our life members/associates
who wish to renew their support of Hadassah, to join. Please complete the
registration form attached to our newsletter and become a Heroine/Hero
Wishing you a year of personal growth, health and happiness,
Julie E. Schwartz
