January/February 2016 Associates Update

Fred Safer, Associates President

Dear Fellow Associates,

In 1966 Associates were officially recognized by Hadassah as an integral part of the organization. This makes 2016 the "Golden" 50th anniversary year.

As the new President of the National Committee of Hadassah Associates, I am very excited to begin my term at such a milestone in our organization's history. This year we will continue to concentrate on our Men's Health Initiative (MHI). Our focus will be on lung cancer.

A Brief Introduction
For those of you who do not know me personally, here is a very short biography. I have been married to Rena for nearly 58 years. We have 2 children, 4 grandchildren (3 are married) and 3 great grandchildren, all of whom live in Israel. We both have numerous relatives and close friends who also live in Israel. During the year 1954-55 I went to school in Israel, attending the "Institute for Youth Leaders from Abroad" sponsored by the Jewish Agency. Subsequently I led Habonim youth groups in Boston, MA and Providence, RI while attending Boston University.

I am in the process of retiring, after over 45 years, from the private practice of law. Prior to that I was self-employed in a couple of retail businesses.

Along the way I was active in and an officer locally with Israel Bonds, the Board of Jewish Education, JNF, Hillel Academy Day School, Federation, a Jewish Assisted Living Residence facility, Parents of North American Israelis and my synagogue.

Many years ago my wife, when she was a Hadassah region president, made me a member of Associates. It was a fortuitous act on her part. Associates are a vital and critical part of the Hadassah organizational team as we support two hospitals, Young Judaea scholarships and three youth villages in Israel. Plus we are involved in medical education and Israel advocacy in the United States.

Looking Ahead
Commencing July 25th through 28th Hadassah will hold its National Convention in Atlanta, GA. There will be special speakers and programs just for Associates. This will include our annual business meeting and touring in Atlanta. Associates who are designated "delegates" from their local Hadassah chapters will be able to deduct for income tax purposes some of their convention related expenses, if they itemize. In addition, Associates will be able to attend numerous programs planned for the women. I urge all Associates to plan on attending. This year's theme is "The Power of Our Dreams."

I also encourage all Associates to act upon our program goals of "Advancing Medical Research, Healing & Education". Our financial goal for 2016 is to raise $ 125,000.00. I ask that you seek new Associate members: a single payment of $ 212 provides a lifetime Associate membership. Talk to your friends and relatives. Make gift memberships for children, grandchildren and others.

If possible, participate as an annual "Keeper of the Gate" as we strive to achieve our financial goal. Keepers is a contribution category in which both men and women can participate. Associate and women Keepers of the Gate can designate their contributions for our Men's Health Initiative and the local Hadassah chapter receives credit towards its fundraising goal. Keepers provide an annual minimum commitment of $ 1,000 or more. Together we can achieve our MHI fund raising goal of $ 125,000.

Thank You
Last but not least a special thank you to Jeff Richardson for his terrific presidential leadership and to Fern Tannenbaum for her strong efforts as Associates Chair. They were both wonderful assets on behalf of Associates.

I look forward to working with each and every one of you as we move from "Strength to Strength" in this "Golden" year to achieve our Hadassah goals.

Shalom,

Fred Safer

Hi Fred, I am interested in inviting Associates to a Purim event at 40 Wall St. that is sponsored by the Golda Meir Group in March. Any ideas?
