Hadassah Associates Charity Poker Tournament

On November 21, 2015, the Chicago-North Shore Hadassah Associates hosted Hadassah’s first ever “Hold 'Em” Poker Tournament benefitting the Associates’ Men’s Health Initiative and more specifically research and treatment of heart disease at the Hadassah Medical Organization. Heart Disease was the second prong of the three-part Men’s Health Initiative and the focus of 2015 Associate fundraising. The tournament was an Associates national event piloted in Chicago and chaired by Jeff Richardson, Immediate Past President, National Committee of Hadassah Associates, and Brian Rubin, Chicago-North Shore Associates Co-Chair. Chicago-North Shore boasts over 1000 Associates.
In attendance were about 45 poker players and about another 15 spectators who came out on a cold and snowy Chicago night to support this great cause and have fun at the same time.
The evening started with cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres. Just before play began, attendees viewed Hadassah Dr. Haim Danenberg’s video describing the TAVP procedure for heart valve repair developed at Hadassah. [The TAVP (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) procedure is a minimally invasive procedure used to repair a valve without removing the old damaged valve, and is reserved for those people for whom an open-heart procedure is too risky.]
Jeff Richardson then spoke about the role of the Associates in financially supporting cutting-edge research and treatment through the Men’s Health Initiative, and made a soft ask for additional support.
Then the play began! The tremendous energy in the room was palpable. Everyone had a great time and they showed it by making many “rebuys,” in effect, donating more money for our cause. The prizes were fabulous as well, with the tournament champion winning a donated all-expenses paid weekend at the Venetian in Las Vegas!
There was a lot of “buzz” about how much fun the participants were having, and by the end of the evening, the event raised about $9100 for Hadassah and the Associates’ Men’s Health Initiative. A lot was learned during the planning of this inaugural event and the Chicago-North Shore Associates are already planning the next one for September 2016, which we know will be bigger and better.
