October 2017 Associates Update

Making an Impact
The Hadassah Associates MEN'S HEALTH INITIATIVE in 2017 (and beyond) is focusing its fundraising and educational efforts on meeting the challenges of Alzheimer's disease. I am pleased to announce that with your support the Associates have raised almost $130,000. Thank you.

Hadassah Medical Organization has been a leader in the fight against Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's Disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. One of the most costly diseases in the developed world, last year, Alzheimer's drained some $200 billion from the United States economy. This devastating illness already affects one in every 20 people aged 65 to 85, and almost half of those older than 95—some 24.3 million worldwide.

Past Local Events

Luis Numkin, Executive VP, Hadassah Associates and Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer, Alzheimer's Foundation of America

On September 14, Associates Executive Vice President Louis Numkin represented the Associates at the Alzheimer's Foundation of America's Educating America Tour in Washington, DC. As an exhibitor, Louis provided information about the Associates and Hadassah's efforts to find a cure and treatment of this dreaded disease.

On October 8, Hadassah Northern New England presented "Star Trek: Jewish Values in Space," featuring attorney and educator Daniel Sachs, who presented some of his extensive research on this topic, focusing on the connection between the story lines and characters of “Star Trek” and the Jewish values of shalom bayit, teshuvah and more. Michael Finegold, Associates Chair for Hadassah Northern New England, spoke to the group at the event, which raised nearly $500.

On September 10, close to 200 people attended the fifth annual public affairs event sponsored by Associates of Monroe Township, NJ, featuring a keynote address from a Baptist minister from Tennessee whose late father, Sgt. Rodney Edmonds, was responsible for saving the lives of several hundred Jewish POWS in Germany during World War II. The 2018 program, according to Associates Chapter Co-president Manny Strumpf, will salute Israel's 70th anniversary.

The Gilda Mallin Chapter of Hadassah in Florida has invited Associates to their Opening Breakfast for the first time, providing us with an opportunity to address the chapter and talk about our efforts. Associates will also have an opportunity to raise funds at a boutique being held at the event. This is a first step in getting the Associates more involved.
