May 2015 Members of the Month

We live in every Congressional district in the nation. We are mothers and daughters, nurses and doctors, housewives and teachers, activists. An invisible connection binds us to each other, into a community. We share a profound love for the Jewish people, and Israel. We share a commitment to women and believe in women’s strength—and our own. We strive to act on our Jewish values, and make the world just a little better, every day. Above all, we know that each of us can make a difference and that, together, we can transform the world, and change history. We know it because we’ve been doing it for a century, and we won’t stop now. Come along with us, into our second century.

Seattle Chapter, Hadassah Pacific Northwest
Seattle, Washington

I and my daughters, aged 3 and 5, live together in the Wedgwood neighborhood in the hamish Northern Seattle eruv.

What keeps you busy?

I am a single mother to two daughters, making sure their lives are rich with experiences and opportunities, which carefully shape their development. Both of my daughters are life members and leverage their birthday parties as fund raisers using the online Hadassah donation campaign profile tool. I am Organizational VP for our chapter of Hadassah and work with my sisterhood to ensure the continued support of Hadassah and Israel’s mission in our region. I am also a healthcare IT strategist and policy executive.

What are your interests/hobbies?

I love to read, and collect antiquarian books. I enjoy running, hiking, and being engaged with my children. I love to study Judaic texts and Israeli political research, and history.

Why did you become a member?

I watched my father transform a community with very little industry and a poor economy into a booming city by starting up, and acquiring 1-17 hospitals. He created clinical excellence, drawing research firms, enabling the start-up of higher education life science schools and programs. This drew companies which then attracted top talent, much in part to the excellent medical facilities offered in the community. I believe Hadassah has done this for Israel and will continue to enable and transform a stronger richer economy that will then help us to sustain and enrich our homeland, so we can continue to extend our healing touch to the rest of the world.

One thing we should know about you.

I wrote a children’s book with my daughter called Finding Sparkle, The Secret Unicorn with my daughter, and as a family we spend a great deal of time caring for and enjoying our pony, Sparkle.

Registered Dietitians Nutritionists Chapter, Hadassah New York
New York, NY

I was born in London, England and live in New York, NY for the last 25 years, after living in Jerusalem. Almost all my family is in London, England or Israel, except my partner and some distant cousins

What keeps you busy?

I came to the US to study nutrition and after graduating, worked as a clinical dietitian. I then started teaching college, full time. Now I teach part time, counsel patients and give nutrition and cooking classes to clients of a Community Agency. Grading papers, curriculum development and setting up lesson plans keeps me busy.

What are your interests/hobbies?

In spite of the above, I make time to have a subscription to the Opera this season, go to concerts, belong to my building’s book club (I always bring dessert – Jewish holiday specials are always in big demand) and, of course, cook – I’m interested in food from different cultures, particularly Jewish communities around the world.

Why did you become a member?

I became a member because through a chapter of like-minded dietitians it reconnected me with my Zionist roots.

One thing we should know about you.

I’m a July baby, which means loyalty is my middle name, unless you let me down. Israel never has and never will.

Charm City Group of Hadassah Greater Baltimore
Baltimore, MD

We are empty-nesters who have relocated to Baltimore for new career opportunities. I manage a fundraising team for the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, and have really enjoyed being involved with Charm City Hadassah and as an exhibit guide at the National Aquarium.

What keeps you busy?

My involvement with the Johns Hopkins community, Hadassah and the Aquarium have enabled me to see how they contribute so powerfully to the character and future of Baltimore. It is a privilege to be an ambassador for each organization.

What are your interests/hobbies?

My husband and I enjoy family life, volunteer commitments, travel, water sports and spending time with our rescue dog.

Why did you become a member?

Joining the inaugural group of Charm City Hadassah was a wonderful new experience for me -- my first connection with Hadassah. I am very grateful to the co-founders, Ilene Cohen and Roberta Greenstein, for their foresight in creating a book group and interesting activities for me and others new to Baltimore and the community. Their very thoughtful outreach to me has been a highlight of my first year in this very special city.

One thing we should know about you.

I strongly encourage others in our area and across the country to explore involvement with their local chapter.
