From our President
2020- the beginning of a new decade.
Can you believe that?
Feels like a Star Wars time zone.
I have just returned from the Region Presidents trip to Israel.
Israel has been a part of world culture for over 4000 years.
Yet the vibration of the country seems as if it is brand new.
No one sits still in this country.
The frenetic pulse of the atmosphere pushes your back to speed you up to your destination. And once you’ve arrived urges you to search some more.
A study in contrast. The Western Wall.
A religious symbol for thousands of years pulls even the non-believer into writing a tiny note, a wish, a prayer. Who are we to question this wall of ages?
The ground trembles with memories with the knowledge that very ground can be a cover for other civilizations from millennials way before us.
There is no room for egos when there have been so many that were there before us.
Our founder Henrietta Szold lies peacefully atop a beautiful knoll on The Mount of Olives. As we recite a Shehecheyanu, our eyes take in the glory of the City of Gold.
What better accolade can we offer to this tiny woman who when she dreamed, dreamt “big”.
Yad Vashem. The very name causes prickles down my spine.
What can I say to make this less disturbing, “never again”.
Children’s paintings with an old persons eyes try to eek out some warmth from the horrors they have witnessed.
The Valley of the Lost Communities. Dozens of Polish, Czech, German, Hungarian Cities that we’re once filled with Jews, working, living, loving in their family homes within thriving Shtetls gone, burned, buried forevermore. Did I pray? Yes, and then cried for me and you and all the 6,000,000 others. Next month I’ll write some more about our trip. However, if you have never taken a Hadassah Trip to our Jewish Homeland I honestly recommend you take your best partner and book one as soon as you have the time. I know that you will thank me.
PS Hadassah Hospital is a beacon of Light in this miracle of a country.
That is because You give, you care and without you that beacon will fade.
We must keep that light on.
For your children, my children, and their children, Happy New Year. May we have peace through healing.
