From our President

Spring 2019

Dear Hadassah Sisters,

“The Jews had light and gladness and joy and goodness.”  These words are from Megillat Esther, the biblical scroll that tells the story of an extraordinary woman whose courage and ingenuity saved Persia’s Jews from annihilation.  Jews everywhere observe the mitzvah of hearing the words of this scroll.  But women especially find meaning in this ritual, since the miracle of Purim was made possible through the righteousness of a woman. The women of Hadassah know about miracles.  We’ve been making them for over 100 years.

Remembering the story of Megillat Esther, Henrietta Szold gathered her friends in 1912 to make a difference for the suffering people in pre-state Israel and they chose to call themselves by Esther’s Hebrew name – Hadassah.  How fitting is it that Hadassah also stands for myrtle, a hardy supportive plant that binds and enriches the soil.  From our beginning, we have enriched the land of Israel with trees, parks and reservoirs, and supported its people through education, training, cutting-edge health care and medical research.  Hadassah has enriched the lives of American Jewish women, binding us to our homeland, our heritage, and our values.

The holiday of Purim does not celebrate a military triumph, but instead is a day of feasting and rejoicing that justice was done.  Everyone is invited to take part as the suspenseful story is read.  We respond noisily to drown out the name of the evil Haman with our voices and our graggers.  The story reminds us of the importance of raising our voices to combat evil and bring about change.

No matter our ages or stages, responsibilities or routines, we are all intelligent women dedicated to making a difference.  Like hamentashen, we are bound together by three themes –empowerment of women, Israel, and tikkun olam.   We emulate Esther who spoke out to save her people as we raise our voices on issues of importance to women, families, and Jews everywhere.

Hadassah connects women to each other and their communities as we work together to fulfill our purpose. Our Hadassah Medical Organization treats all who come with expert medical care and attention regardless of their ethnicity or role in the community.  We connect our youth to Judaism and to Israel by working with Israel’s children-at-risk in our Youth Villages and by supporting scholarships for the camps and Israel Programs offered by Young Judaea.  And we enrich our own lives through a myriad of leadership opportunities as we blend purpose and passion in our quest for success.

Hadassah’s success can be measured by the way it heals, treats and educates people, and by the way it builds a grassroots movement, one compassionate woman at a time, with a reputation highly regarded in the world of philanthropy. To find out more first-hand, join us for an excellent chance to connect, learn & recharge at the 99th National Hadassah Convention – go to http://www.hadassah.org/convention-2019/hadassah-national-convention.html.

Remembering the empowering words of the Purim story, let us firmly resolve to prolong the legacy of Esther and Hadassah, and may our work continue to bring light and gladness, joy and goodness to the world for the next hundred years and beyond.
