Business Session

On July 14, 2015 the Associates powered-up at their Business Session in Philadelphia. A new Associates president, Fred Safer, was elected along with a new Executive Vice President, Jim Rotenberg, a new Vice President, Louis Numkin and Board Members at large, Rabbi Peter Grumacher, Aaron Weissman, Jack Wiadro and Jeffrey L. Bassin. The new slate will take office on January 1, 2016 for a two year term.

The attending Associates were privileged to hear from Beth Cohen, Director of Global Emerging Growth Services at Greenberg Taurig, LLP. Her company has a strong commitment to Israel and she works with many Israeli businesses. Ms. Cohen gave a wide-ranging look at Israeli innovation from the pill cam to the social media site of ICQ to the navigation app Waze. The Associates learned that Israel has the highest ratio per capita of engineers, 10 Nobel laureates and they are #3 after Canada on NASDAQ with the US as # 1. Beth Cohen’s presentation made the audience proud of all Israel has to offer especially when she mentioned that Israel was a leader in desalinization and ranked first in many business areas.

The last presentation was a panel of Doctors from Philadelphia who spoke about a Mission they participated in to discover the abuse of people in order to benefit political gain during war. They were 4 out of the 10 Physicians participating on the mission and came from Philadelphia, Chicago and Washington DC. Dr. John Cohn wrote about the experience in a letter published in the Lancet and stressed that Israel never stopped treating the Palestinians during Operation Protective Edge. Dr. Marc Zimmerman visited Ziv hospital in Tzfat to learn about how they took care of 1500 Lebanese and Syrian casualties from the Syrian war. He stated that patients from Syria are beginning to see Israel as no longer being the enemy. Dr. David Forsted visited Soroka Hospital in Beersheva, a civilian hospital that handles military casualties because Israel does not have military hospitals. Dr. Yoni Parmet added that supplies were being delivered to Gaza during the entire war of Operation Protective Edge. He ended by saying you should go to Israel and learn for yourselves.

Attending the National Business Meeting and Symposium was an inspiring experience and an opportunity for Associates to learn about Israel, Hadassah’s latest research and network with other Associates. Next July the Hadassah National Convention will be in Atlanta, Georgia and will be even more exciting. Mark your calendar for July 26 – 28, 2016 to join the Associates for Convention in Atlanta

Nassau walk-a-thon

Nassau Region Associates Make Strides for Stem Cell Research

Nassau Associates joined their Region’s Walk-A-Thon and focused their fundraising for Stem Cell Research as part of National Hadassah’s Men’s Health Initiative. Jim Rotenberg, the Nassau Region’s Associates Chair worked together on this event with the Great Neck Walk-A-Thon Associates Co-Chairs, Donald Ashkenase, Martin Domnitch, Neil Garfinkel & Michael Korff with Roz Meyerson as the Associates liaison and a co-chair.

Jim says, "Each year for the past several years, Hadassah Nassau on Long Island raises funds for stem cell research by sponsoring a Walk-a-Thon. As part of this fund raising initiative, Hadassah Associates ask fellow Associates and friends to join in the Walk as part of National Hadassah’s Men's Health Initiative. In addition to personal contacts, and use of the excellent Hadassah's Men's Health Initiative Brochure, a personalized letter is sent by the Chairs to Associates and friends focusing on Hadassah Hospital's stem cell research accomplishments, especially relating to men's health challenges. The minimum cost to walk is $20/person, $36/family and sponsorships and signage opportunities are available at higher giving levels. Hadassah Walk-a-thon T-shirts are distributed to contributors. This year, the Associates focus was on Cardiovascular Research and the successful growth of heart stem cells. The Associates effort separately raised about $10,000. We look forward to repeating our success next year as proud Hadassah Associates: Advancing Medical Research, Healing & Education."
