On November 11-14, 2022, immediately preceding the Hadassah 100th National Convention in Jerusalem, members of the Physicians and Nurses & Allied Health Professionals Councils gathered for their long-awaited trip to Israel. The trip was filled with what can only be described as “Hadassah moments.” One such moment occurred the very first evening, as we were greeting Shabbat overlooking the Western Wall. Upon hearing our conversation, an Israeli woman approached us asking if we were from Hadassah. When she heard we were, she expressed her profound gratitude for the care her youngest child received three years ago when she was born at Hadassah Hospital. The baby had experienced respiratory distress at birth and underwent the first micro invasive procedure in Israel to correct a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, which had previously required major open surgery of the chest.
We were welcomed into the homes of some of the Hadassah Hospital nurses for Shabbat and Saturday night dinners. Shul-hopping Saturday morning led us into the Great Synagogue of Jerusalem. After spending the day exploring the Old City, we returned to the hotel for Havdalah, led by Hadassah’s one and only BG (Barbara Goldstein), Deputy Director of the Hadassah Offices in Israel.
The following day we toured Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus and Ein Kerem, seeing the state-of-the-art equipment in several departments including the Emergency Department, Labor & Delivery, Cardiac Catheterization lab and Radiation Therapy. Physicians Council Co-chair, Laura Brandspiegel, brought hand-knit baby hats to Labor & Delivery at Mt. Scopus, donated by the East Brunswick Chapter of Hadassah Southern New Jersey.
The Dedication in memory of Dr. Nancy Dintenfass for the double patient room in the Round Building donated by her family and the Physicians Council was held at Ein Kerem. Dr. Dintenfass’s husband Bruce Gurewitz and one of their sons, Jason, and Physicians Council Co-Chair Stacey Keen gave moving tributes to the life and legacy of Dr. Dintenfass, a Physicians Council member who passed away in 2018.
Sunday night, a tour of Mahane Yehudah market and a cooking lesson by a professional chef were followed by a graffiti tour of the market. The graffiti looked more like professional artwork than the graffiti we’re accustomed to seeing in the United States.
The final day of the tour began with a visit to Caliber 3, the top Academy for Counter Terror and Security in Israel. We were energized by a talk from Colonel Sharon Gat, followed by training which included responding to a mock terrorist drill, a security dog demonstration, and learning to shoot rifles.
The dedication ceremony of the Goldwurm Auditorium at Ein Kerem donated by the Nurses & Allied Health Professionals Council was moderated by Barbara Sofer. Watch the full program here.
