The Educators Council is a free, add-on benefit available to all Hadassah members who are current or former educators in any environment or role. The council is specifically aimed at fostering community among our many valued educators, so that they can bring their expertise to supporting one another while contributing to Hadassah's vital work of healing our world together. For educators who are not yet members, this is an excellent way to join Hadassah in a meaningful way.

Karen Bloom has been a life member of Hadassah since age seven when her mother purchased her life membership by collecting coupons for a local grocery store. Over the past few years, she has had the honor of being a part of the team that created the newest of Hadassah's four professional councils: the Educators Council. Together with her co-chair, Gail Hammerman, Karen helped get the council off the ground with a full year of thorough prep work followed by two years of leadership, presenting free programming to the educators of Hadassah throughout the year.

Following her 3 years as co-chair of the council, Karen moved into the Chair of Program Subcommittee position for the council and became an active member of the Educators Council Steering Committee. This year is also Karen's first year as Region President for Central Pacific Coast Region. She is also an active leader in her local Chapter, Oakland Ruach. She is so grateful for all of the leadership experiences she has been offered and wishes to thank all of the wonderful National Hadassah mentors like Gail Hammerman, Peg Elefant, Liz Alpert, and Dale Marcus who have supported her journey as a Hadassah leader.

I am a special education teacher in the Boston Public School System. I currently teach Life Skills and Functional Academics to high school students with Autism and Intellectual Impairments. I am also the inclusion consultant for URJ 6 Points Sci-Tech Academy, a Jewish sleep away camp in MA. I love being able to support student and camper success while working with others who are passionate about building inclusive communities that meet all members’ needs.

I have worked in education for over a decade, after getting a BA in Psychology from Tufts University and an M.Ed from Lesley University. I live in Boston with my husband and our 5 month old daughter Ari, who was just gifted a child life Hadassah membership by her grandmother. I am a second generation Hadassah member. I was inspired to join Hadassah after seeing how meaningful the community has been for my mother, and the positive impact Hadassah has on health and education in the US and Israel. I am currently on the National Educator Council Steering Committee as well as a member of the Hadassah Northeast Evolve Young Women's Leadership Network. I love that Hadassah gives me the opportunity to advocate for what’s important to me while building relationships with strong, supportive Jewish women.

I earned my undergraduate degree in Education from Penn State, and I also hold a Master’s degree in Reading Education and ESL from Vanderbilt University. My favorite part about being an educator is watching my students grow in their academic abilities from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. Some of my previous students could not speak any English at all when they arrived but were speaking in complete sentences by the end of the year. I have enjoyed working with students from many different countries, including Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico, Nepal, Somalia, Haiti, and Pakistan.

As a third-generation Hadassah Life Member, I’ve followed in my mother Gail Black’s footsteps, who has held numerous roles within Hadassah ranging from the chapter to national levels. Inspired by her commitment, my husband Ellie and I look forward to continuing the legacy with our 4-year-old daughter, Sofie, and 1-year-old son, Jared. We also share a love of our 2 dogs, Watson and Holmes, as well as the New York Rangers. Hadassah’s dedication to global advancements and community has been a cornerstone of my life, and I’m proud to continue this legacy by being active in the Educators Council.
