Bari Popkin’s first trip to Israel in 2008 with her synagogue was not the trip she had hoped it would be. In fact, it was a huge disappointment because she was sick the entire time and missed everything!
So when the opportunity for a "girls' trip" to Israel on a Hadassah mission presented itself four years ago, she jumped at the chance to go back and loved every minute of it, including the 100th anniversary celebrations of Hadassah's world-renowned Ophthalmology Department.
Bari felt a personal connection to Hadassah Medical Organization when her group brought Beanie Babies for pediatric patients. She said the Chagall Windows in the Abbell Synagogue were amazing and she would never forget hearing "BG" (Hadassah Office Israel Deputy Assistant Barbara Goldstein) tell the story of the beautiful stained-glass windows and how, when Marc Chagall was asked to do something for Hadassah, he replied, "What took you so long to ask me?"
"I was so inspired by what I saw. Everything motivated me to become more active and to support Hadassah as an Annual Donor. I became a Traditional Keeper of the Gate after that trip and have now decided to step up and become a Golden Keeper!"
At home in Boston, Bari is on her region's Annual Giving committee. Until her trip to Israel with Hadassah, she hadn't known about Annual Giving — but she now believes everyone who is able should make an annual commitment to support the good work of Hadassah and become an Annual Donor at whatever level they can.

At the end of the day, Judaism is important to us and Israel is near and dear to our hearts — to mine and to my husband Charlie's. On Sunday, July 31, the Seattle Hadassah unit of the Pacific Northwest region held a summer brunch celebrating Youth Aliyah. Close to 50 guests were hosted in the beautifully blooming outdoor gardens of gracious hostess, Jacquie Bayley. The entertainment of Dr. Carrie Horwich, a certified laugh leader and Keeper of the Gate warmed up the guests. Next, past National President and current National Youth Aliyah Chair Marcie Natan spoke on absorbing Ukrainian refugees and supporting immigrants and at-risk youth at Hadassah's Youth Aliyah villages. Marcie shared inspiring stories of transformation and healing made possible by generous Hadassah annual givers.
In addition to the many annual givers who renewed their annual gifts, six Hadassah members generously stepped up and became new annual givers with commitments including Chai Society, Silver Chai Society, Traditional Keepers of the Gate and Silver Keepers of the Gate.
Additionally, a current Golden Keeper of the Gate made an extra one-time $1,800 donation for Youth Aliyah on top of her $5,000 annual gift. Along with this spirit of generosity, the joy of renewed friendships and in-person interactions made this event a fun, feel-good time for all who attended.

Close to 50 guests were hosted in the beautifully blooming outdoor gardens of gracious hostess, Jacquie Bayley. The entertainment of Dr. Carrie Horwich, a certified laugh leader and Keeper of the Gate warmed up the guests. Next, past National President and current National Youth Aliyah Chair Marcie Natan spoke on absorbing Ukrainian refugees and supporting immigrants and at-risk youth at Hadassah's Youth Aliyah villages. Marcie shared inspiring stories of transformation and healing made possible by generous Hadassah annual givers.
In addition to the many annual givers who renewed their annual gifts, six Hadassah members generously stepped up and became new annual givers with commitments including Chai Society, Silver Chai Society, Traditional Keepers of the Gate and Silver Keepers of the Gate.
Additionally, a current Golden Keeper of the Gate made an extra one-time $1,800 donation for Youth Aliyah on top of her $5,000 annual gift. Along with this spirit of generosity, the joy of renewed friendships and in-person interactions made this event a fun, feel-good time for all who attended.

Risa Stein from League City, Texas is a member of Hadassah Houston and she is a mover and a shaker. In Hadassah, she has moved up the Annual Giving ladder from being a Chai Society member to a traditional Keeper of the Gate. When she heard about a challenge grant in the Greater Southwest Region, she was the first person to speak up and increase her annual commitment! Soon after, she became a Chai Keeper and last year she increased her commitment by $74 a year in honor of Israel's 74th birthday.
