You might say that Hadassah is in Shirley Blumenfeld's blood. Hailing from Baltimore, the hometown of Hadassah's founder, Henrietta Szold, Shirley grew up in a Hadassah family. Her parents were Holocaust survivors, and her mother was very active in Hadassah, encouraging her daughters to follow her example when they became young adults. It wasn't Shirley's time — yet.
Shirley and her husband, Howard Blumenfeld, raised three sons. Years later, when their son, Ben, was at a yeshiva in Israel, he developed a case of food poisoning and was eventually brought to Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem. Shirley was on her way to Israel soon thereafter on a trip with her synagogue, and went to see Ben, whose care was superb.
"What completely blew me away," she says, "was the camaraderie among doctors, nurses and patients, Arabs and Jews, and the compassion and care. When I got back to Baltimore, I knew just what I wanted to do."
She went to the Hadassah office in Baltimore and renewed her membership. She also became active in her chapter, and generous with her tzedakah in support of Hadassah's hospitals in Jerusalem. Her son, Ben, eventually married his wife, Chaya, in Israel, and they experienced the same excellent patient care when their four children were born at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem.
"As I got more active in Hadassah, and with more trips to Israel, Hadassah became more and more important to me," says Shirley. "I'm very, very attached to Hadassah, and I have a lot to be grateful for."
Her college friend, Dina Lipschultz, brought her to a region event, which opened Shirley's eyes even more, and strengthened her commitment, increasing her generosity of spirit. Shirley went to Hadassah's National Convention and became a Keeper of the Gate with the encouragement of her friends. Her gifts have supported the world-class medical care and research she witnessed firsthand over the years.
Recently, Shirley has stepped up her Keepers gift to the Golden Keeper level, a decision that came naturally to her. "Hadassah is part of me," says Shirley, adding, "it's my tzedakah, and a sisterhood of women who love Israel and support the people of Israel. It is so worthwhile!"
Described by others as a dynamo, Shirley is currently on a one-woman mission to increase membership in the Hadassah Greater Baltimore region among women of all age groups and backgrounds. "I wish other women could see Hadassah’s value and importance," she says. Shirley has made her three daughters-in-law and eight granddaughters life members, and is teaching her grandchildren the importance of tzedakah, thus passing her values to them.
Shirley frequently uses the word "grateful" when discussing her relationship with Hadassah — and Hadassah is extremely grateful to Shirley for her generous heart and ongoing commitment to Hadassah's lifesaving work.
As Shirley notes: "Hadassah is a part of me. Everyone here in Baltimore knows it!" And now, we do, too. Yasher ko'ach!

Dr. Jamshid "Jim" Tehrani resides in Drescher, Pa., north of Philadelphia. He has been a pharmacist (registered in Pa.) for 40 years and has owned his own business, an independent pharmacy, for 37 of those years. Jim has a story not typical of most Hadassah Associates. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy in Iran under the Shah regime. At the time, Jews were free to practice religion, however, things changed quickly. Religious freedom was decreasing, lifestyles were changing and opportunities were disappearing. In 1968, Jim decided to move to the US — the land of opportunity — a place where he could freely practice Judaism.
Jim heard about Hadassah while living in Iran. When he came to the US, he learned more about Hadassah through his interactions in the Jewish community, until finally he visited Israel on a Hadassah mission. During the trip, Jim was especially moved by Hadassah's state-of-the-art hospitals. When he returned home, he contacted Hadassah to get more involved in the Hadassah Greater Philadelphia Region. He is so proud of what Hadassah does for Judaism and for Israel and knows that Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) helps people in Israel and worldwide. Because of his involvement in the local region, as well as his continued passion for the work being done at HMO, he became an Associate Keeper of the Gate four years ago. Jim's wife, Miriam, his sister, Esther, and several other relatives have a great love for Hadassah and support the work we do.
"I feel that Hadassah is doing a marvelous job," says Jim, adding, "It is the responsibility of all Jews to realize what Hadassah does and help Hadassah with their fundraising. We need to support, promote and help Hadassah accomplish their goals."
Jim hopes that his altruistic efforts will inspire others to give. He looks forward to recruiting more people to help Hadassah in their efforts.

We're truly grateful to everyone who joined us on Monday, May 10, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Keepers of the Gate with a spectacular Keepers virtual reception, followed by our first-ever Yom Yerushalayim celebration — Hadassah and Jerusalem: United Forever. This combined event honored our amazing Keepers of the Gate from across the country — and commemorated the reunification of Jerusalem and Hadassah’s hospitals — through wonderful musical performances and guest appearances by Tony Award nominee Tovah Feldshuh and Dalia Itzik, our new Hadassah Medical Organization chair, among others.
The Annual Giving department would like to thank our partners in Hadassah’s Education & Advocacy Division as well as our colleagues in Marketing & Communications for all of the work that went into this event. We would also like to acknowledge our 21 NEW Keepers of the Gate and numerous current Keepers who were so inspired by the program that they increased their annual gifts. Kol hakavod!
In case you missed this extraordinary program, you can watch it in its entirety online!

We would also like to acknowledge our 21 NEW Keepers of the Gate and numerous current Keepers who were so inspired by the program that they increased their annual gifts. Kol hakavod!
In case you missed this extraordinary program, you can watch it in its entirety online!
On Thursday, May 6, Hadassah New York hosted a spectacular Annual Giving event, featuring comedian Ester Steinberg. This free, virtual event highlighted Hadassah’s most recent medical developments and the impact Annual Giving makes on all of Hadassah’s projects before all 50 Keepers and Chai Society members laughed the night away during Ester’s incredible comedy set. Over $5,500 was raised for Hadassah through new and step-up annual gifts. Ester, a life member of Hadassah, is happy to perform for your next Annual Giving event. For more information on how you can book Ester, please contact Bryce Diamond, Associate Director of Annual Giving, at bdiamond@hadassah.org.

This past March, I was honored to speak via Zoom at a Keepers of the Gate event hosted by the Richmond Chapter, located in Virginia and part of the Hadassah Southern Seaboard Region. This chapter is remarkable because 6% of their members are Keepers of the Gate. I wish we could clone their members in every chapter and region in the country!
Richmond Chapter has about 1,000 members and 50 of them were Keepers before the event. These ladies don’t just talk the talk, they walk the walk! They worked hard and made many calls to recruit new Keepers and by the time the event was over, they had 11 new Keepers, bringing their total to 61! Kol hakavod to the Richmond Chapter and Hadassah Southern Seaboard Region leadership.
Currently, we have about 3,250 Keepers across the country, which is a little over 1% of our 300,000 members. Keepers and Chai Society members donated over $4.5 million dollars last year! Imagine how much good we could do in Israel and the world if we could double that number.
Will you invite one person to join you as a Keeper? If asking friends to donate isn’t in your comfort zone, we can help. Just send me the names and contact information of any prospective Keepers, and our fabulous AGOs or I will make the calls. Email me at lblock@hadassah.org or call me at 713-858-5531.

Linda Freedman Block
