Why I Became a Szold Keeper of the Gate

Why I Became a Szold Keeper of the Gate

By Robin Littman

Robin Littman from Houston, Texas, was the first new official Szold Keeper ($3,600 annual commitment) in the country. When asked why she became a Keeper of the Gate, she immediately replied, "That's my legacy!" Here’s Robin's story:

I initially joined Hadassah in search of Jewish female role models. Our twin daughters were approaching their b'not mitzvah and I needed some solid Jewish influence. Joining Hadassah gave me that and so much more.

Within six years, I was a group president and on the chapter and region boards. I was Houston's major gifts co-vice president while organizing a three-day multi-region conference and I created and led a successful leadership training course.

My husband became an Associate, our daughters became life members and one daughter was so influenced by my leadership roles, she became president of the Jewish association at her college.

I gained so much from Hadassah — organizational, advocacy and leadership skills to name a few. But the real gift of being a part of Hadassah was the unexpected and now unshakeable connection with Israel, and ultimately my faith. From my Hadassah havurah to countless meetings, conferences and conventions, and ultimately to our daughters and my b’not mitzvah on Masada, Hadassah was the motivating factor on my Jewish journey.

There have been many full circle moments on that journey. My daughter, Rachel, has a rare Jewish genetic disorder and when we toured one of Hadassah's hospitals, we discovered the Israel-based FD treatment center there. But one of the sweetest moments happened at the 2007 NYC National Convention. It was my first and I loved every minute of it. I attended a workshop on defining our legacy. Until that moment, l honestly had never considered it. But there all the threads of my involvement in Hadassah came together; I closed the gaps in my Jewish identity and the need to find purpose in my life. I knew right then what I had to do — I became a Keeper of the Gate!

I have encountered incredible Hadassah women who have modeled the Jewish woman I wanted to become, and who I now count as my most treasured friends. Their hard work and passion in Hadassah's mission spurred me on.

Our work and our mission are worthy and vital to the medical community which Hadassah serves as well as to the global community which benefits from our good works. My annual Keeper's gift ensures just that.

By Linda Freedman Block, Chair, Keepers of the Gate & Cheryl Sperber, Vice Chair, Keepers of the Gate

Whether you're a high roller or a "slot machine lover," it's a sure bet you'll want to get together with your Hadassah sisters (and brothers — we love our Associates!) in Las Vegas July 28-30, 2024!

You'll need to take a break from the tables to attend our FUNtastic Keepers of the Gate reception where we can thank you again for your generous ongoing support. Emailed Invitations will be sent to all Keepers in good standing. Thanks to you, Keepers of the Gate provided the best possible medical care to one million people last year! Since October 7, we treated nearly 500 patients, most of whom have been soldiers, and we received 160 displaced teens at our Youth Aliyah villages.

We can't wait to thank you in person in Las Vegas! See you in July!

Meet Associate Keeper Rob Eisenstadt

Meet Associate Keeper Rob Eisenstadt

Born to parents who were survivors of the Shoah, Rob Eisenstadt grew up in a home with a strong Zionist affiliation. Since his childhood summers at Camp Yehudah, part of the Zionist Organization of Chicago, Rob has always maintained leadership roles in a variety of Jewish and Zionist organizations. As a college campus leader, as president of the Young Adult Division of the Zionist Organization of Chicago, to the present as a board member of his synagogue, Moriah Congregation of Deerfield, Illinois, the Illinois Holocaust Museum and the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Rob has prioritized his Zionist and Jewish identity.

In 2017, when Rob's wife, Greta Rothschild, was about to assume the presidency of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore, he demonstrated his support of her commitment by becoming a Hadassah Associate. Today, Greta is a national board member, as well as national chair of Young Judaea. To further celebrate Greta's dedication, Rob became an Associate Keeper of the Gate in 2020.

In November 2022, Rob traveled to Israel with Greta and Hadassah in celebration of our 100th National Convention. For Rob, it was a trip with many "firsts." Among the highlights was a special tour of Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus, meeting Dr. Tamar Elram and visiting the various departments, including the cath lab.

Rob and Greta were recently honored at the "Miracles of Hadassah" gala by Hadassah Chicago-North Shore, making a major gift to support the Pediatric Emergency Department at Hadassah Mount Scopus.

For Rob, becoming an Associate Keeper of the Gate represents a significant personal connection to the ongoing work of our organization. While his Keeper's gift is directed to Young Judaea scholarships (both of his and Greta's children have attended Young Judaea camps), a Keeper's gift can be directed to any of our areas of need — HMO, Youth Aliyah, etc. As a reminder, during these terrible times of war, sustaining funds are sorely needed to help rehabilitate an entire country — physically, emotionally and socially.

Rob, thank you for your generosity and for being an Associate Keeper of the Gate.

Year of the Incentive — 2024

Year of the Incentive — 2024

We are always looking for ways to increase the numbers of Keepers of the Gate as well as encouraging our existing Keepers to consider stepping up their gift to the next giving level. And to help us promote new and step-up Keepers, we have wonderful incentives available.

All new Keepers and Keepers who step up can receive a complementary "Healing of the Daughter of My People" necklace while supplies last.

All new Keepers who designate their gifts to Young Judaea can receive this beautiful Gary Rosenthal-designed tzedakah box, also while supplies last.

In addition, all new or step-up Golden Keepers of the Gate shall have a special naming at the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem. This naming opportunity for Golden Keepers is on the Lighting the Way panels on the upper walls next to the patient rooms. Not only is this a special gift for Golden Keepers, but a meaningful and beautiful gift to Hadassah.

Did you know that all Keepers in good standing have their names displayed on a scrolling digital wall at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem? Your listing defaults to your first name/last name, but it can be changed to anything as long as it is 36 characters or less, like "The Goldberg Family" or "Golde & Tevya Milkman." Please let your annual giving team member know if you'd like to change your listing.
