What do a retired Air Force officer and a young home care manager have in common? A lot! They are both Hadassah Keepers of the Gate, and they are a terrific mother-daughter team!
Sharon Star was born in Oklahoma and joined the Air Force right out of college. There, she met her husband, and they moved from California to Springfield, Illinois in 1999. A couple of “nice women in their temple” invited her to a Hadassah meeting, and they even offered to pick her up! She liked the women at the meeting, so she joined.
Today, Sharon is president of Hadassah Great Plains. She began her philanthropy journey as a Chai Society member and, as the years went by, she increased her Annual Gift. She recalled that during her time as Springfield Chapter president, there were only six Keepers. Once involved at the regional level, she wanted to do more; she became a Keeper of the Gate herself. Inspired by the wonderful work of Hadassah, she took her philanthropy one step further, and Sharon is now a Chai Keeper. She makes automatic monthly payments, which she says," makes giving painless!”
Hadassah is a family affair for Sharon. Her daughter, Sammy Roth, is proudly following in her mother’s footsteps but forging her own Hadassah path as a member of the third cohort of Evolve Leadership Fellows. Designed for women 45 and under, the Evolve Leadership Fellows is a two-year leadership engagement initiative that inspires emerging young leaders through specialized opportunities to grow and learn. As part of the program, participants attend monthly virtual learning sessions and travel to Israel for an immersive Hadassah experience.
Sammy was approached by a family friend about Evolve and found it to be a perfect fit. She connected with the other Evolve participants over Zoom and in person in New York. She has loved the knowledge and leadership skills she has gained, as well as the new community of friends she made.
Because she “believes in everything we do,” Sammy decided to become an Evolve Keeper. She is especially impressed by the breakthrough technology and lifesaving treatments at Hadassah hospitals in Jerusalem. Evolve Keepers of the Gate may begin their annual Keepers’ donation by paying a minimum of $500 their first year, $750 their second year, $1,000 their third year and ongoing after that.
Kol Hakavod (all the honor) to Sharon and Sammy for their leadership and for inspiring others to step up to become Keepers of the Gate.

Rivanna Hyman had always meant to join Hadassah. But without any chapters around Seaford, New York, where she lived, she joined ORT instead. When she moved to Country Pointe, in Plainview, New York, she no longer faced this obstacle. After meeting her new neighbor, Ellen Hershkin, then Hadassah national president, Rivanna joined Hadassah's Tobay Chapter.
It seemed right, as Rivanna’s mother, Gutia Goldberg, had been a nurse at Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus in the 1930s and '40s. Rivanna’s maternal grandparents had left Poland and took the family to pre-state Israel. They lived in Tel Aviv, near a young Zionist named David Ben Gurion! Gutia met and married Mathias Greenberg (Rivanna's father) in Israel, but they soon relocated to the US.
Fast forward to the 2020s. Rivanna, who had been to Israel many times to visit family, and her partner, Joel, who had never been, took their first trip to Israel together with Hadassah, at Ellen's suggestion.
The trip was "fantastic." Rivanna had been to Hadassah hospitals before, but this was at an entirely different level. The contagious enthusiasm of trip leaders Cathy Olswing and Michelle Conwisar, along with meeting the amazing Barbara Goldstein and Barbara Sofer, made the trip memorable. "To feel it, see it and live it, makes a big difference."
Their visit to Meir Shfeyah Youth Aliyah Village was very impactful. They were especially moved by students from Ukraine, who sang to them. Rivanna said, “The importance of our youth, and the life we’re able to give them, blew me away.”
Joel became an Associate, and they both decided to become Keepers of the Gate. Rivanna’s Keeper gift is dedicated to Youth Aliyah or ‘greatest need’ as circumstances change.
"All of my mother’s and father’s family have fought in every war to create and protect the State of Israel. I owe it to them to do my part in supporting our cherished homeland. Hadassah helped me find like-minded women whose love of Israel is both constant and contagious."

There are many ways to make a Keepers of the Gate gift. No matter what level you have committed to, you have one calendar year to finalize your donation for it to count for that “annual” year.
You can pay the entire sum anytime during the year, or you can choose a payment plan, in which your credit card is billed monthly or quarterly for whatever amount is comfortable for you.
In addition, you can use Israel Bonds, Donor Advised Funds or pre-tax dollars from your retirement account. Most people MUST take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their IRA when they turn 73 years old (as of 2024). Always consult with your financial advisor to choose the best method for you.
If you would like to discuss increasing or stepping up your Keepers gift or finding a payment method that works for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the annual giving officer assigned to your region.
