L’Dor v’Dor with Hadassah!

By Linda Freedman Block, Chair, Keepers of the Gate

When National Principal Giving Chair, and new Philanthropy Co-Coordinator Diane Issenberg says she is part of a huge “L’Dor v’Dor Hadassah family,” she isn’t exaggerating! As a newlywed, she was embraced by a very loving, very Zionist, very Hadassah-connected family. Her husband Harold’s grandmother, z"l, was a Life Member, as were her mother-in-law and all her sisters-in-law. Diane has also made her daughters, daughters-in-law, granddaughters and great granddaughters Life Members. If you lost count, that’s SIX generations!

Diane Issenberg and Shira Dabush-Kersz

Diane quickly became involved and was her group’s president at age 28. Her father-in-law gave her his mother-in-law’s Life Membership pin and said, “This is not a passive gift.” She took that to heart … and the rest is history.

Professionally, Diane worked for 35 years at the University of Miami School of Medicine. She was the CEO and CFO of the Center for Research and Medical Education and Simulation. Fundraising was one part of her job. Diane loved Israel and wanted the people of Israel to have the same kind of medical care that we have in the United States. She combined her professional skills and talents and dedicated herself to the wellbeing of the citizens of Israel.

Diane is a past Greater Miami Region president, coordinator of philanthropy, national vice president and Hadassah Medical Organization chair. She is also a past camp chair for our Young Judaea camp in Hendersonville, NC.

She became a Keeper of the Gate the first year the program was launched, 28 years ago, because she felt that a Keeper commitment was the Gate to Healing –– healing patients at our hospitals and healing at-risk children at our Youth Aliyah villages. She also loved the idea of supporting Young Judaea and making camp available to as many Jewish children as possible.

In a world where antisemitism is so present, Diane wanted to ensure that Hadassah’s work will continue for generations to come. She surprised her granddaughter, Shira Dabush-Kersz, by making her an Evolve Keeper of the Gate at the Hadassah National Conference in Las Vegas this past summer. Shira was thrilled and so honored, especially when Diane removed her Keeper pin and pinned her granddaughter. Shira wrote to her grandmother that attending the conference and becoming a Keeper of the Gate “gave me the biggest, most clear reason why this organization must continue. I’m finally getting to follow in your footsteps, which, once upon a time, was something I could only dream of.”

Clearly the apple doesn’t fall far from the ”grandmother tree.” Shira and her husband, Gustavo, have two sons, aged 13 and 2 ½. She is a super busy full-time event planner but knows Hadassah needs to be a priority in her life. Shira has been connected to Hadassah since she was little. She grew up in Israel and remembers hearing about her grandmother’s work with Hadassah every time Diane came to visit, and after her family moved to Florida when she was 15, she even worked in the Miami regional office. Hearing personal stories from a wounded soldier who was treated at Hadassah, including at the Gandel Rehabilitation Center at Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus, and meeting two dynamic Youth Aliyah students at the National Conference, energized and inspired her! Hadassah will definitely continue to thrive, under Shira’s leadership. She has plans to start a new Evolve group in Aventura and the Miami region!

Kol ha’kavod (all the honor) to Diane and Shira, who hope this is the beginning of a new Keeper of the Gate tradition of making our children and grandchildren Keepers of the Gate.

A Trio of Dedicated Young Judaea Keepers

A Trio of Dedicated Young Judaea Keepers

By Cheryl Sperber, Vice Chair, Keepers of the Gate& Chloe Webster, Annual Giving Officer, Hadassah Metro

Lynn Davidson

When she became a Keeper of the Gate in 2001, Lynn Davidson wondered why her gift couldn’t be allocated to Young Judaea. As it turned out, she was one of the very first to initiate the Young Judaea option for Keepers. An active Hadassah leader in Hadassah Nassau since 1991, when it became time to choose a sleepaway camp for daughter Lauren, YJ Sprout Lake was the obvious choice. Lauren went on to attend teen camp Tel Yehuda, a six-week Machon trip to Israel and, ultimately, Young Judaea Year Course in Israel. As a junior in high school, Lynn’s other daughter, Amy, took part in a six-week YJ Israel Discovery trip.

But wait, there’s more! At Tel Yehuda, Lauren became friends with her future husband, Dr. Daniel Hoffman, a Young Judaean from San Juan, Puerto Rico. This summer, Lauren and Daniel’s son, Abraham, enjoyed his first YJ summer at Camp Judaea in Henderson, NC.

Clearly, Young Judaea is very close to Lynn’s heart. She and husband, Michael, are also Young Judaea Founders. “Young Judaea and Hadassah continue to be my way of expressing love of Judaism and Zionism. We have been enriched by our experiences and beautiful friendships. We hope our passion will extend to the next generation.”

After her father, Isaiah Sorrell, z"l, passed away in 1968, Leila Van Gelder’s rabbi, Saul White, z"l, of Congregation Beth Shalom in San Francisco, encouraged her mother to send her to Young Judaea club. As a shy, quiet and impressionable child, Leila’s attendance at Young Judaea clubs led her to regional and national summer camps where she found a love for Israel. She attended Year Course 1973, lived on the Young Judaea alumni-founded Kibbutz Keturah and participated in the movement’s university arm Hamagshimim. After studying nursing and working in Cambodian refugee camps, she ultimately made Aliyah to Israel, where she worked as a nurse at the Hadassah Medical Organization. According to Leila, Young Judaea led her from one “rich life-changing experience after another.”

Years later, Leila joined Hadassah as youth activities chair to help restart Young Judaea clubs for her children. She sent her children from California to Tel Yehuda. Just like their mother, they would complete a Year Course in Israel and, eventually, they chose to enlist in the IDF as lone soldiers.

A Keeper of the Gate since 2004, Leila has been a supporter of Hadassah and Young Judaea for over 30 years. Having benefited from Hadassah summer camp scholarships, she was ready to give back to the organization that had helped contribute to her growth. As Leila says, “I designate my gift to Young Judaea because I believe in its mission and have personally experienced its power to transform the lives of many Jews. It certainly did so for me…. The life-long movement of Young Judaea continues to engage, teach and guide the next generation to love and support Israel. This is well deserving of my continued annual support.”

A Keeper of the Gate since 2006, Wendy Comstock decided to become an annual donor after she returned from a Young Leader’s mission. Based out of Salem, OR, Wendy and her family live in a community with a small Jewish population. As a child, she was in Hashachar and she wanted the same experiences for her own children. “YJ was a way of engaging my children in Jewish/Zionist programming," Wendy says. "We had to commute an hour to participate, but it was well worth it.”

Indeed, Wendy’s two daughters attended Tel Yehuda for several years and both were in the “Maz” for the region (PNW). As an adult, one of Wendy’s children worked summers at Tel Yehuda, year-round in New York for Young Judaea and then at Hadassah. Both are fourth-generation life members. “YJ gave my children a sense of identity that they otherwise would not have," Wendy says.

A retired administrative law judge, Wendy has been involved with Hadassah since 1981 and has been active on her region board for over 20 years. After returning from her Young Leader’s mission, and finally having the financial wherewithal to afford an annual commitment to Hadassah, she pledged her support to Young Judaea. As she says, “All those adventures [at Young Judaea] helped mold my children to believe in giving back and social action.” Eighteen years on, Wendy continues to live by those values as a Keeper of the Gate.

Passing on Hope and Healing to Hadassah’s Evolve Keepers: How to Donate Your Pin to the Next Generation

By Chloe Webster, Annual Giving Officer

Almost everyone has a special piece of jewelry — a dazzling reminder of a past that exists in the present. Perhaps it’s a ring passed down from a family member, a token to celebrate a special milestone or a beautiful adornment worn to symbolize your values. At Hadassah, our beautiful Keeper of the Gate pins do just that — they evoke the commitment, hope and passion that lives in the hearts of all Hadassah members. And now those pins can symbolize so much more.

Now, our Keepers of the Gate have the opportunity to pass their pin down to an Evolve Keeper — a woman 55 or under who, just like you, believes in the power and purpose of Hadassah. When you choose to pass down your pin, you pass on inspiration and hope for the future, from generation to generation.

If you would like to donate your Keeper of the Gate pin to an Evolve Keeper or have any questions, please contact evolve@hadassah.org.

Hadassah Was the Big Winner at the Keepers of the Gate Reception in Las Vegas!

Hadassah Was the Big Winner at the Keepers of the Gate Reception in Las Vegas!

By Annual Giving Team

Close to 200 Keepers of the Gate rubbed elbows, clinked glasses and raised lots of money for Hadassah in Las Vegas! Keepers of the Gate Chair Linda Freedman Block and Vice Chair Cheryl Sperber expertly emcee’d the reception, and speakers Dalia Itzik, Hadassah Medical Organization board chair, Prof. Yoram Weiss, Hadassah Medical Organization director general, and Tracey Drayer, Philanthropy Division coordinator, made the case for giving to Hadassah, and our Keepers answered.

We are proud to share that 47 donors announced (or told us quietly) that they would like to become a new Keeper, step-up to a new Keeper level or increase their current gifts. Of those, 11 were new Evolve Keepers. In total, $42,400 was raised in connection with the reception.

Thank you to the Annual Giving staff and volunteers and the Major Gift professional team, who generously filled necessary roles at the event. In addition, that evening we officially fulfilled the generous $100,000 match from an anonymous donor in the Greater Southwest Region. A total of 54 donors were inspired by and wanted to be a part of the 2:1 match for Keepers of the Gate. Cumulatively, we raised $57,660, which exceeded our goal of $50,000 to meet the match.

How to Make an Annual Gift to Hadassah: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Make an Annual Gift to Hadassah: A Step-by-Step Guide

By Chloe Webster, Annual Giving Officer

The end of summer is upon us — the leaves will soon start to brown, and within a few weeks we will observe the two most important holidays of the year, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Around this time of year, the Annual Giving professionals at Hadassah start to receive one question: How do I make my Keeper of the Gate donation?

We’re so glad you asked!

There are many ways you can make a Keeper of the Gate gift to Hadassah, and it all depends on what works best for you. You can make your donation by:

  • Phone: If you like to make your donation over the phone, give us a call, we’d love to hear from you! You can reach out to your Annual Giving officer/specialist or call Donor Services at 1-800-928-0685.
  • Check: You can mail a check to your region’s geographic office or to Hadassah’s national office at Attn: Hadassah Annual Giving, 40 Wall St. 8th Fl, New York, NY 10005.
  • Stocks: To make your donation by stock, you will need to fill out a stock transfer form. To do so, please reach out to Tanya Stolstein at tstolstein@hadassah.org.
  • Israel Bonds: Fully mature Israel Bonds may be used to fulfill any level of Annual Gift. To donate your Israel Bond, please contact Aisha Stephen at astephen@hadassah.org.
  • IRA: If you would like to make your donation through your IRA minimum distribution, please contact your financial institution. Our EIN number is 13-1656651.
  • Website: Annual Givers can make their donations online through Hadassah’s website, but should be aware that their donation will recur each year on the anniversary date of the original donation. However, this is a wonderful option if you would like to make recurring  annual or monthly donations. If you would like to make a one-time Keeper of the Gate donation please give us a call.

Please note, all checks of any kind, whether personal or from an IRA, should note that the donation is for Keepers of the Gate.  Please include your Hadassah member ID number if possible.

In the end, no matter how you choose to make your Keepers of the Gate donation, we are so grateful that you do. Thank you for your continued support of our lifesaving work.
