As the United States prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding, Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, Inc., embraces this historic milestone as an opportunity to renew our collective commitment to democratic values and ideals.

America’s 250th anniversary in 2026 is not only a time for celebration, but also a call to action. It serves as a reminder that democracy is not a finished project but a living endeavor that depends on the engagement, vigilance and collaboration of all its citizens in shaping a shared future. Hadassah holds true to the wisdom found in Pirkei Avot, often translated as Ethics of Our Fathers, from Rabbi Tarfon: While it is not incumbent upon us to complete the work, neither are we at liberty to desist from it. And from Rabbi Hillel: If not now, when?

Hadassah has a long history of standing up, elevating the voices of women and empowering members to advocate in the US at the local, state and federal levels. Hadassah remains steadfast in its dedication to foster an informed, engaged and inclusive citizenry. In March 2026, advocates from across the country will gather in Washington, DC, for a Hadassah Day on the Hill to meet with their federal officials and other policymakers to discuss pressing issues and advocate for Hadassah’s priorities.

As we reflect on the nation’s founding principles, the American people must also acknowledge the challenges that threaten to divide us. In this moment of national reflection, Hadassah urges all Americans to reject polarization and the politicization of issues that touch our shared humanity. Antisemitism, racism and other forms of hate and intolerance are not partisan concerns; they are moral ones that demand our united opposition. The targeting of any community undermines the fabric of a diverse democracy and erodes the sense of safety and dignity to which all Americans are entitled.

The promise of American democracy is strongest when every individual feels empowered to participate and when our public discourse is rooted in truth, empathy and shared purpose. Hadassah encourages all Americans, especially women, to take an active role by participating fully in civic life. This includes voting in all types of elections, engaging directly with elected officials and supporting the spirit of democracy by championing constructive dialogue across differences and practical policy proposals.

Hadassah urges its leaders and supporters to celebrate our democracy by joining in the effort to strengthen it together. Let us commemorate our country’s independence not only with reverence for the past but also with a sense of responsibility for the future.

Hadassah's Policy Statements represent the organization's official stance on a wide variety of issues facing our nation, Israel and other international matters of concern. Policy Statements are debated and voted on at national meetings by Hadassah’s national board and delegates from our membership. Once approved, statements become official policies of the organization and serve to define Hadassah's overall agenda and advocacy priorities. Hadassah, as a charitable organization classified under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, is prohibited from any direct or indirect support of, or opposition to, candidates for public office.
