The Hadassah Medical Organization, the Jerusalem-based hospital system of Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, has opened the Robert I. Schattner Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities in partnership with the Hebrew University–Hadassah School of Dental Medicine.
A reflection of the hospital system’s longstanding commitment to inclusive, patient-centered healthcare, the Schattner Oral Health Center will offer dental care for those with physical, cognitive and complex medical challenges and will serve as a training ground for Hebrew University-Hadassah dental students.
Located at the dental school, the Schattner Oral Health Center will deliver coordinated, multidisciplinary care to 30 to 40 special needs patients each day in five treatment rooms designed with special needs patients in mind.
The Center will give Hebrew University-Hadassah dental students real-world experience in how to care for patients with physical or cognitive challenges — experience that will complement the theoretical and clinical knowledge the students receive as part of their studies. The clinic will also offer opportunities for research and serve as a hub for continuing education that will equip community dentists with the knowledge and confidence to treat special needs patients.
Israel’s Ministry of Health has welcomed the initiative.
“The Center is fully aligned with the Ministry of Health’s policy to reduce gaps and ensure that all health services are accessible to populations with special needs,” said Senior Deputy Director for Strategic and Economic Planning Ayelet Greenbaum-Arizon at the opening.
Yoram Weiss, MD, Director General of the Hadassah Medical Organization, emphasized Hadassah’s longstanding commitment to people with special needs, commenting, “We have made it the mission of the Hadassah Medical Organization to share our doctors’ knowledge and experience with all those in need of healing. The new Schattner Oral Health Center will provide accessible and compassionate care to everyone who comes through its doors.”
Avraham Zini, DMD, dean of the Hebrew University–Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, highlighted the Center’s importance for future clinicians, saying, “The Schattner Oral Health Center will not only provide treatment for patients. It will also offer critical training to ensure that our students and residents — the next generation of dentists — have the skills and sensitivity required to treat this population with professionalism, respect and the utmost expertise.”
The Robert I. Schattner Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities was made possible through the generous support of the Schattner Foundation, Henry Schein, Inc., and the Bergman Family Charitable Foundation.
