The Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) has been named the number one hospital in Israel for scientific output, according to the leading journal Nature. The publication’s Nature Index also ranks HMO among the top 200 institutions worldwide.
The Nature Index tracks primary research articles from 145 natural science and health science journals, selected by an independent group of researchers based on reputation.
From 2024–25, HMO was especially prolific in clinical sciences, including patient-centered medicine, as well as oncology and carcinogenesis, microbiology, genetics, cardiovascular medicine and hematology, along with many other fields.
Prof. Eyal Mishani, head of HMO’s Research and Development Division, explained how the Nature Index evaluates institutions. “The ranking is based on impact factors such as what we publish, how often our work is cited and, increasingly, how many online visits our publications receive. These academic measures help assess the quality of our scientific work,” he said.
Mishani said he was “delighted but not surprised” by HMO’s latest achievement, noting that he has closely followed the organization’s research growth over the past two decades. He credited HMO’s staff for the success.
“The scientific work we do here is of very high quality. We are involved in some of the most advanced medical research today, and most importantly, our teams conduct research across a wide range of fields. This achievement is not the result of a single paper or discipline. It reflects the strength and dedication of our entire staff,” Mishani said.
Mishani also highlighted the essential role of Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, HMO’s parent body.
“Without sustained support for research, these accomplishments would not have been possible,” he said. “We would not have been able to establish institutes and centers such as the Wohl Institute for Translational Medicine, the Hadassah Organoids Center, the Hadassah Cancer Research Institute and our Cyclotron Radiochemistry facility.”
