Hadassah Magazine: Israel, America and ADHD

What explains the significant rise in reported diagnoses of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, in children and adults in the US in recent years? And what is behind the doubling of the rate among children in Israel since 2005?  

As reported in Hadassah Magazine’s article, “Israel, America and ADHD,” the debate over the causes remains unsettled. However, most experts blame it on a combination of increased awareness, reduced stigma and a genuine increase in the disorder’s prevalence.

The climbing numbers have prompted Israel and the US to lead in ADHD research, with Israel focusing on investigating the disorder’s prevalence and impact, as well as developing therapies that help both children and adults.

According to the article, one of the best-known therapies for ADHD in Israel may be Adina Maeir’s cognitive-function intervention. A professor at the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Occupational Therapy, Maeir pioneered the application of occupational therapy to the disorder.
