The Hadassah Medical Organization’s Profs. Ran Nir-Paz, Hadil Onallah, Yechiel N. Gellman, Amir Haze, Danna Dror, Yonatan Oster, Meir Cherniak and Fabienne Attal are part of the team of authors from Israel and Portugal who conducted a study to determine the safety of a bacteriophage mixture for treating diabetic foot infections.
Their clinical trial tested, on 19 participants, a bacteriophage mixture, TP-102, in diabetic patients with both infected and non-infected foot ulcers and showed that TP-102 was safe and well tolerated when applied directly to the wound, offering a groundbreaking treatment in the field.
For people with diabetes, foot ulcers are common as is peripheral artery disease, which limits blood flow to the legs. Together, they raise the risk of infected foot ulcers and can lead to amputation. Antibiotics to treat the infections may not fully reach the wound.
Further studies are necessary to confirm the safety and efficacy of TP-102 in larger populations with diabetic foot infections.
