Studying Long-Term Outcomes of Nonsurgical Scoliosis and Myopathy Treatment

Hadassah Medical Organization orthopedists Dr. Josh Schroeder and Dr. Alexandra Satanovsky are among the authors of a study focusing on the long-term outcomes of patients with myopathy and scoliosis treated without surgery. Myopathy refers to diseases affecting voluntary muscles, such as limbs, pelvis, back, face and diaphragm.

A review was conducted on the records of 118 patients at a children’s rehabilitation hospital; 17 patients underwent surgery, while the remaining 101 were treated without surgery and were monitored for up to 33 years. The study finds that even with worsening scoliosis and limited functional independence, patients treated without surgery are generally satisfied with their quality of life.
