Well Read: Three Years of One Book, One Hadassah

This June marks the third anniversary of One Book, One Hadassah, Hadassah’s national book club. When it comes to a shared love of books and reading, it’s clear that Hadassah members old and new are on the same page.

Since its inception, One Book, One Hadassah has secured its place as part of the American Jewish literary landscape. It’s seen continually growing engagement, with the number of attendees gradually increasing to a total of more than 11,500 to date, and it continues to build momentum.

A joint program created during the pandemic by the Hadassah Engagement Division and Hadassah Magazine, One Book, One Hadassah features live virtual interviews with an impressive lineup of acclaimed Jewish authors conducted by Hadassah Magazine Executive Editor Lisa Hostein. Past guests include Jennifer Weiner, author of the first One Book selection, Big Summer; Elyssa Friedland, author of Last Summer at the Golden Hotel; Letty Cottin Pogrebin, author of Shanda: A Memoir of Shame and Secrecy; Kristin Harmel, author of The Book of Lost Names; and Lisa Barr, author of Woman on Fire. The program also provides discussion guides to enable local book groups to continue the conversation about the book. One Book, One Hadassah has fostered a sense of community among Hadassah members around the country, giving them the opportunity to regularly connect with one another and with Hadassah without ever having to leave their homes.

On June 15, 7 pm ET, One Book, One Hadassah welcomes award-winning author Elizabeth Graver, author of Kantika, a multigenerational saga exploring the complexities of faith and identity, exile and belonging through the lens of a Sephardi Jewish family and the women at its core. This One Book, One Hadassah features a special performance by feminist Ladino rock artist Sarah Aroeste.

Bookmark this: One Book, One Hadassah will interview Cathleen Schine about her latest novel, Künstlers in Paradise, on August 17.

One Book, One Hadassah convenes every other month and is free and open to everyone. It alternates months with the Hadassah Magazine Discussion, another beloved virtual series hosted by Hostein.
