About this episode

Hadassah On Call: New Frontiers in Medicine kicks off Season 7 with a straight-talking guide to men’s health that every family should hear. Our guest is Dr. Ofer Gofrit, chair of the Urology Department at the Hadassah Medical Organization, who treats and studies prostate cancer daily.

We unpack what prostate cancer is, who’s at risk and why early screening matters — without rushing anyone into unnecessary procedures. As Dr. Gofrit puts it, “Early diagnosis in prostate cancer usually means cure or follow-up,” and active surveillance is often the right first step. We also talk about symptoms (or the lack of them), the pros and cons of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing, when MRI and biopsy come into play and how doctors decide between surveillance, surgery, radiation or systemic therapy.

Lifestyle and family history both matter. Dr. Gofrit’s rule of thumb: “Whatever is good for the heart is also good for the prostate.” In other words, a balanced diet, regular aerobic exercise and a healthy weight are essential, especially if prostate cancer runs in the family.

The episode also includes practical advice for patients: Choose a comprehensive center with all options under one roof, so if complications arise, you’re already in the right place.

Finally, we detour into Dr. Gofrit’s research, which links the decades-old BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccine against tuberculosis to reduced Alzheimer’s risk, and what that could mean for the future of precision medicine.

Seven Seasons of Impact — Donate to Hadassah
For the past six seasons, our listeners have heard about the incredible work Hadassah doctors are doing. We've explored how they are closing in on a cure for cancer, examined the common causes of something as simple as a headache, investigated a possible cure for allergies and even provided a glimpse into how Hadassah hospitals are helping the most severely wounded patients — and their families — who are still healing from the October 7, 2023, terror attacks and the subsequent war with Hamas.

Hadassah On Call has been a platform with purpose. So let's keep the momentum going as we kick off Season 7. By donating to Hadassah, you can ensure that our hospitals remain global leaders in medical care, treatment and research. And we can ensure that Hadassah On Call continues to amaze you month after month.
