The Educators’ Council is proud to support our Youth Aliyah villages and their programs. We are confident that those of you who are reading this know the history of Hadassah and Youth Aliyah. But in my mind’s eye, I can still see Ms. Henrietta Szold standing ankle deep in the Mediterranean Sea, awaiting those children, many of whom were orphans, landing at Israel’s shores from war-torn Germany and Europe. For all of us, the rest has been history. And what a history it is!
Currently, our two villages—Meir Shfeyah and Hadassah Neurim—are full to capacity, which includes families and students due to the tragic occurrences on October 7 and the continued war ever since. As they have done in the past, both of our villages have opened their doors and become a home to the displaced families from the north and south. We are so proud and thankful for the caring and love extended, as well as the education provided for most of the school year.
Meir Shfeyah Youth Village was established on land outside of Zichron Yaakov, and was owned by Baron Meir de Rothschild who gifted the land to Hadassah in 1923. Hadassah Neurim Youth Village was established in 1948, north of Netanya, on what had been a police station for the British Army. Today there are 46 youth villages serving 11,000 students, all of which give students an equal chance to succeed in life. We are so proud to say that Meir Shfeyah is ranked #1 out of the 46 in the country!!
Both villages host students from the Na’aleh program of the Jewish Agency. These are children that make Aliyah before their parents and are in Israel alone. Of our Na’aleh students, on average 95% stay in Israel after graduation and complete their army service. 40%-45% stay in Israel and bring their parents to Israel to live.
Since it was established, Neurim has had over 8,000 graduates. Before 2018, only 25%-28% of the students finished their matriculation exams. That number is now at 70%! In 2020, 80% of the students took the 3 point matriculation exam in English, the lowest level test they can take. Now, in 2024, 80% of students are taking the 4/5 point matriculation exam, the highest level there is, allowing students to be admitted to more elite units in the IDF and attend quality universities after their service.
It is sad to note that this year, 5 names have been added to the Memorial board at Neurim due to alumni killed on October 7 or as soldiers fighting the current war. May their memory be for a blessing.
Looking forward to this school year, there will be several programs featured at Neurim, including the Surfing Center, the Animal and Dog Center, the Robotics Center, and the Athletic Center which trains students who might one day win a gold medal at the Olympics!!
Visiting Meir Shfeyah is like being on a college campus. It is smaller than Hadassah Neurim but with twice the student population. All the streets are paved, the grounds are gorgeously landscaped, and the views are truly awesome.
Hadassah fact: National Presidents of Hadassah get their name on a building at one of the villages after completing their presidencies. Responding to the trauma caused by the current war, Hadassah recently opened the Past President Ellen Hershkin Therapeutic Center. Kol hakavod!
Half of the students in school at Meir Shfeyah come from near-by Zichron Yaakov, where parents petitioned the Minister of Education to allow their children to attend Meir Shfeyah because the education programs were so superior!
Many of the students at Meir Shfeyah are challenged—either being on the Autism Spectrum or having ADHD. Other students have difficulty learning or are challenged socially as members of the LGTBQ community or had been bullied in their previous schools. Every student is different, but the whole school community prides themselves on their culture of acceptance, inclusion and diversity.
