“If you’re under surveillance, then nothing bad will happen.”
Though the most common malignant tumor in men, Dr. Ofer Gofrit, chair of the Urology Department at the Hadassah Medical Organization, says this of prostate cancer on the newest episode of the Hadassah On Call podcast.
“Early diagnosis does not necessarily mean early treatment,” he continues. Active surveillance is very common practice today and may be the solution for overtreatment that was so common in the past.
And because prostate cancer doesn’t present symptoms until the very late stages, Dr. Gofrit emphasizes the importance of early screening at age 50. “Prostate cancer is a slow-growing tumor. There is time to diagnose it early.”
On Below the Belt: Prostate Matters, Dr. Gofrit tells us more about risk factors, prevention, PSA testing, treatment (when needed) and more.
